Good going, Emily. You just revealed yourself to somebody. For what? Sugar? I'm fucked. I'm going to get arrested. Or worse. Last thing I need is to have the government coming after me for being a breathing glowstick. I don't this in my life. I need to just sleep forever. I walk into my bedroom, taking off my jacket and throwing it onto the dresser. I gotta figure out my plans. Am I going to stay here in Washington? Or am I going to have to go somewhere else? I really don't want to move. However, my safety outranks my personal wants. I need to stay alive - after all, there's a reason that I have these powers. Don't know what, don't know why, but it's there.
And I need to figure it out. Another siren's wails pierce the air, sending a shiver down my spine. Fuck, Emily, think. I don't have all day. For god's sake, the cashier probably spilled everything to the cops the moment they arrived. I can't stay here in Washington. It's too obvious. I need to get out of here. Somewhere inconspicuous. Somewhere that I won't be noticed. I begin to scatter the room, gathering the necessities. Some clothes, some snacks, some other random things that might come in handy for the trip. I even slip a pocket knife into my pocket. Brandon had gotten it for me after I told him that some guy had tried to catcall me on the way out of the grocery store. I told him that it was overkill. I wouldn't pull a knife then, but in the circumstance I'm in, I feel that I might need it.

I don't know how I ended up in New York. I started in a taxi to the train station, then a train to a bus, to a taxi again. Somehow I ended up sitting in Grand Central Station. It's been about 2 weeks since I left Washington and my old life behind. I adopted new names in other cities I had stopped in. I was Natalie Mendez in Chicago, Samantha Birk in Cheyenne, and Amanda Hill in Saint Paul. I didn't need people to track me. I know that I'm taking this too seriously, but I need to. Staying alive is serious. I've been traveling too long, it's time to settle. I guess the land of art and bright lights will do. Especially for a living ravelight like me.
A week later, I had managed to find an apartment to live in and a job. It seemed like I was starting to settle in well. I was working as a waitress at a local diner. The food was good, better than most of the diners that I had eaten at on my trip here. Thank god, I would hate myself if I had to work somewhere shitty. The alarm on my phone snaps me out of my thoughts, the words "Work Bitch" flashing on my phone screen. Fuck, why did I agree to take on the late shift tonight? Only the weird people are in the diner that late. Ugh. Throwing the blue and white apron into my purse, I grab my car keys. Time to get this shift started. Climbing into my car, the drive was only a few minutes. Thank god, because New York traffic could be a bitch sometimes. I walk into the diner, clocking in for my shift a minute before I'm supposed to. Thank god the diner is pretty much empty. I sit around for the first hour of the shift due to nobody coming in. This wasn't anything new, but I appreciated it. It was way different than my normal morning shift. I was checking my phone when I heard the door open. It was 2 am, the bars must have just let out. I walked around the corner before noticing the group of men standing there. There were five of them, which meant I had to give them one of those giant booths. "Hi, for five?" They only nod in response. Um, okay. Grabbing the menus, I walk them to the "party booth". "My name's Angel. I'll be your server today, what can I get you guys to drink?"
They look at each other before one speaks up. "Water." He says in a gruff Russian accent. That explains it.
"I'll be right back with that and to take your order." I smile at them before walking away to prep the water order. I hear them begin to talk amongst themselves in Russian. I think back to when I took an online course for year in Russian. I had wanted to travel and I was infatuated with Russia at the time. It's rude to eavesdrop on their conversation, I try to tell myself. However, I start to listen and try to translate their conversation. They were talking about some mission. They mentioned killing a lot. A hostage. I finish filling the water, placing it all on a tray and bringing it over to them. I distribute out the drinks and take their order, taking it into the cook and promptly returning to listen to their conversation from the safety of my drink station. The name Avengers is brought up, along with the word Winter and more killing. They were talking in muffled tones but I was still able to pick up on bits and pieces of what they were saying. I pick up a location...maybe its the location of their base. The bell of the kitchen rings, signalling the finishing of the order. I take their food out and as soon as they arrive, they leave. They left a pretty good tip - 15 bucks - but that wasn't the thing that I was focused on. I was more focused in the fact that I most likely overheard a criminal organization's evil plot and lived to talk about it. Who would I talk about it with anyways? I'm alone in the big city.
The hours pass by quickly, the end of my shift coming before long. Climbing into my car, I place my head onto the headrest.
I should go to the base. I need to stop whatever they're going to do. It's the most I can do.
I shouldn't go to the base. I'm not strong enough to take down a whole criminal organization alone.
I should go to the base. Maybe this is the reason I have these powers I have. I feel my hand heat up as I form a small ball of light in my hand. Maybe I can do something with these.
I start up the car before heading home. After all, I have to prepare for the long night I'm about to have.
