16 - Tensions Arise

I laid in bed awake that night. Steve told me that I should rest, especially after the past couple days. You're over exhausting yourself, he said, sending me off to bed like a bad child.

It's not like I didn't try to sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, the image of my mother from that dream came to my mind. Seeing her alive in my dream after all these years just brought back hidden emotions.

Every time I spoke, her voice reminded me that these powers were once hers. Hers to wield, learn and hide.

I shouldn't be acting like my life is so hard. I was born with these powers. She was taken, kidnapped as a fucking child, and given these powers. The ones that make me a living glowstick. I close my eyes again before groaning. "Friday, is anybody awake?"

"Yes, Miss Blake. Mr. Stark is in his lab and Clint is out on the roof." Hmm. I can go talk to Clint. I don't know why he's awake, but it would be nice to not be alone right now.

"Thanks Friday." I threw on a pair of pants and shoes, before making my way out onto the roof. The cool air hit my body, making me shiver a tiny bit. Clint sat on the edge, facing out to the city. I tiptoed towards him before clapping my hands over his eyes. "Guess who." I murmur before he struggles for a second. "Calm down!" I sit down next to him before he looks over at me.

"Emily, what are you doing awake? It's 2 in the morning." He says before looking out at the city.

The lights shined, almost making the stars invisible. That's the problem with living in a big city. You couldn't see the stars well. "I couldn't sleep. I keep thinking about my mom." I say, laying down on the roof and looking up at the sky. "That's the problem of living in a big city. You can't see the stars. Back in Washington, you could see the stars amazingly. There's way too many lights here."

Clint joins me in laying down, making a small grunt. "Yea, it's not that great." We stay silent for a minute, enjoying the feel of the cool air on our skin and the odd silence for a busy city. "Tell me about your mom. Please." Clint says, eyes still on the night sky.

"She was an angel. She looked just like me when she died. She loved everything she did, had so much passion. She worked with kids, had a side job making art commissions for her online website. She kept the family sane. She kept me sane." I close my eyes, her face popping into my head. "I love her so much. And finding out she had the same powers that I did, its hard to understand how she managed to hide them from me so well. I thought I knew everything about her." He sits up, placing a hand on my shoulder. "It's a lot, Clint."

"I understand, Emily. We all find out new things about ourselves everyday. It's okay. Listen, we have a mission tomorrow. Steve, Natasha and I are going to take down a Hydra base over in Illinois. I can talk to Steve about bringing you along. It's not going to be a hard mission and I'm sure, after seeing what you can do, I can see what he says. If you want to." He says, rubbing small circles into my back.

A mission? I'm not technically an avenger. I want to be one, I have to use these powers for good. If I do well, then it might help convince Fury and the other higher ups to take me on as the newest Avenger. "I want to do it." I say, laying back down on the roof.

I woke up the next morning to Clint pounding on my door. "Wake up, Emily! Launch in 15." He says through the door. I guess they said I could go if Clint's waking me up. Or he's sneaking me on. Either or, I'm going. I throw my normal outfit on: a pair of black jeans and a black shirt, along with a pair of boots. I don't have a suit or anything, so I guess I ought to ask Tony or someone to make me one. Missions meant that I would need a suit.  After I threw everything else I'd need in a backpack, I ran down stairs and up to Clint. "You're early, firefly." Clint says, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. "Okay, on our way." He says before looking down at me. Curse him being just slightly taller than me. "Time to head out. Ready?" He wiggles his eyebrows at me, a giggle raising out of my throat. He's an idiot. We walk out to the quinjet, Clint walking in first with me behind him. "Hey Cap, Nat."

I see them facing a panel on the wall before Steve says his hellos, followed by Natasha. "Clint, where did you put the-" Steve says, turning around before noticing that I was standing behind him. "Emily, what are you doing here?"

"Glad you could make it, Em." Nat says before walking to another part of the jet, leaving Steve standing still.

"Nat and I thought that it would be a good idea to get Em out of her room and to see what we do. Didn't you say that she had taken a Hydra base down before?"

Steve's eyes darken before he steps forward. Fuck, as if he could get more hotter. "Did you get permission to bring her along? I don't remember you asking Fury to bring her." He's asking as if I would bring down the mission. I guarantee that I could kick his ass if I got the chance. I give him a look before walking the direction that Natasha went in. I didn't want to hear whatever bullshit excuse that Steve had for me not to come on this mission.

If Clint and Nat believed that this was a good idea to bring me along, then it was. Steve should believe in me and my abilities.

If not, then I just have to prove it to him.
