"Ow!" Remus yelps shooting up in bed. Sirius stands over him like a shadowy figure in the dark. "Sirius what was that for?"
"Get up, we're going," Sirius orders without question.
"Going where? What time is it?"
Sirius doesn't answer, tossing a pair of shoes at Remus. They hit him square in the chest and he grunts, slipping them onto his feet. "Sirius?"
"Shh," Sirius hushes pressing a finger to his lips. "Just don't say anything. At all."
Sirius holds Remus' hand, guiding him out of the dorm and into the corridors under James' invisibility cloak. "I knew it was you that night following me," he whispers while leading him down to the Dungeons. "I could just...feel it."
"Sirius."
"Don't say anything, I'm still mad at you." Remus sighs, following Sirius' lead - as if he had any choice not to. "Whatever you think I'm doing when I sneak out, I'm not."
They stop in front of a classroom, light streaming underneath the door. Sirius backs them against the wall, waiting. Remus glances at Sirius to see him staring forward. He doesn't dare speak against Sirius' order to remain quiet, patiently waiting for what was about to come. After a what felt like never ending minutes, the door opened shedding light into the empty corridor. Nott and Snape stride out, followed by Mulciber, and Zeta, a girl Remus faintly recognized. His heart rate picked up rapidly as they passed, unsure if they could sense him.
When the majority had rounded the corner for good, Sirius slips out of the cloak before Remus can stop him. Sirius casts him a wary look, pressing a finger to his lips as a reminder.
The last to leave the classroom is Regulus Black. Immediately Sirius pins his brother against the wall with much outburst from the younger.
"Fuck off Sirius!" Regulus grunts punching his brother.
Sirius grabs his left arm saying, "Lumos." He points his wand against Regulus' bare forearm.
Regulus shakes his hand off, fixing his sleeve with a sneer. "Every time?" he questions angrily.
"Yeah, I'll keep checking until the day I die Regulus! You don't understand how dangerous it is. I can't protect you forever!"
"I don't need you to protect me!" Remus keeps his hand over his mouth across the corridor when Regulus steps away from Sirius. "I know the risks. I know what I'm getting into."
"No, I don't think you do." Sirius grabs Regulus' shoulders and pushes him against the wall aggressively. "The day you get that mark is the day I'm done. I can't help you anymore and you can't get out. Lord Voldemort doesn't give a shit about you! How many times do I need to tell you?"
Remus' eyes widen. Lord Voldemort? He knew that some of the Slytherins were dark - but to be joining the You-Know-Who? It frightened him completely, numbing him to the core.
"You don't understand, Sirius," Regulus spits. "I'm one of the Sacred Twenty Eight families. I can be in his inner circle - safe."
"Do you think he will protect you when it comes to life or death? He will do whatever it takes to gain power and if you think for one damn second you're safe - you're more of an idiot than I thought. You're not fucking royalty! You're not untouchable! You could die!"
Regulus shoves Sirius away, scowling. "No - you're just angry that I'm the favorite! That I could be more powerful than you! The Dark Lord would never ask for your loyalty!" He stalks away when Sirius says something that makes him stop dead in his tracks.
"Would you kill me if he asked you to?" Sirius asks with a pained voice.
Regulus holds his eyes closed to refuse any tears from forming. "Would you?" Sirius presses.
"No," Regulus growls lowly. "I wouldn't."
Sirius snorts. "I know you wouldn't. But you won't have a choice if it comes down to it."
Regulus doesn't turn around, but his hands clench tightly. Without another word, he rounds the corner and disappears.
Sirius leans against the wall, staring around blindly. "You can come out now," he tells Remus.
Remus slides the cloak off, his eyes red and nearing tears. "Sirius," he whispers.
Sirius falls onto the floor, exhausted. He bends his knees while raking his hands through his hair. Remus approaches with caution, sitting beside him with crossed legs.
"This is what I do," Sirius explains with a choked voice. "They have meetings - they're Death Eaters. Most of them at least. Regulus is next to join. He thinks...he thinks that he can't be hurt because he's a Black. He's a pureblood. Surely Lord Voldemort wouldn't harm one of his own, right?" Remus rests his head on Sirius' shoulder. "He doesn't understand... When I sneak out this is where I go. I'm not some fucking Death Eater like Abigail wants to make everybody believe. I come to make sure that Regulus hasn't got the Dark Mark. I know he's young, and it's too early for him anyway, but it's the only way I know he's still safe. Fucking idiot...he's in too deep but that - that's the end. And we both know he will have the chance to get it. The second he gets it on his arm he's good as dead. And then there's nothing I can do to help him."
"I'm so sorry," Remus whispers. "I know you didn't cast the spell. I shouldn't have even asked."
"You think too much," Sirius says with a smirk. "Sometimes you have to trust your heart over your head." He rests his arms on his bent knees, toying with his sleeves. "These days you can't really trust anyone..."
"We'll find whoever did it, I promise. I won't let you get the blame."
They sit like this together, side by side. Time is inconsequential. Silence is their friend. Remus keeps his head tucked in Sirius' neck, rising and falling with Sirius' breathing pattern. He stares into the abyss of the corridor, allowing himself to be in the moment. Not stressing of tomorrow's foes or yesterday's mistakes. The company of Sirius is enough to keep his mind at bay - to think of the all happiness he was lucky to have in his life. Sirius lays his head against the wall looking up to the ceiling. It felt like the pressure of keeping Regulus safe was a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any moment, and there was nothing he could do except wait.
But the boy resting on his shoulder - the boy with sandy blonde hair and melting amber eyes - he made it feel like everything was going to be okay.
"Remus," Sirius whispers.
"Mhm?" Remus mumbles sleepily.
"I love you."
