Her eyes weren’t green anymore.

They didn’t match the spring grass or brighten like emeralds. They were a sickly gold. A gold that glowed in the darkness of bedroom closets and under beds. It was no longer her eyes, there was no never ending love and kindness. There was just apathy.

"Rapunzel you have to fight it!" Jack yelled, using his staff to block another attack of black sand she threw at him. She controlled it just as well as Pitch only hers swirled around her as if it treasured her. It moved like water, a never ending well of fear.

"There’s nothing to fight." she said stepping toward him. She still wore the clothes she wore yesterday when Jamie told him she had not shown up to baby sit him and Sophie. Her clothes were always bright in color but now they were laced with black sand as if it had ingrained itself in everything about her.

With a flick of her wrist, black sand rose from the ground and came at him in sharp spikes. He quickly jumped up, using the wind and freezing what came to close to him. He slowly came back to the ground, watching her long golden hair move in the wind. It was the beginning of winter and she wasn’t cold. She didnt shiver though her feet were bare on forest floor. Humans got cold.

"Rapunzel, I don’t want to fight you." he pleaded.

"Then don’t."

A whip out black sand came at him, wrapping around his staff and sending it flying. It hit a tree hard, the minor fractures in the wood of his power source hand him clutching his chest.

"What did you let him do to you?" he asked, watching her. She tilted her head and blinked eerily for a moment before looking at her hand as the black sand swirled around it.

"He saved me." she said softly,  though there was no emotion on her face, "I’m not afraid anymore."

Jack’s blue eyes widened. There were no nightmares around her, just the black sand. He had taken over her soul using her own fear of her step mother as a catalyst. If she feels nothing but power, she’s no longer afraid. He stepped toward her, his hands out at his sides.,

"Rapunzel why didnt you ask—"

"I’m not a child anymore Jack." she answered, the black sand started to build around her for another attack,

She was right. She was eighteen years old but because of her mostly sheltered life in Berk, her imagination ran wild. She could see him as soon as Jamie told her that he existed. It was the first adult to ever believe. She was special.

But she wasn’t a child. Guardians protected children.

"Let me help you!"

"I don’t need your help."

Another onslaught of jagged spikes coming straight for him. He moved toward his staff quickly, dodging spikes while destroying what he could with his hands.

"Jack! Rapunzel!"

Dread filled his chest, his heart skipped as fear over took him. No..

"JAMIE! Get out of here!" he screamed, turning his heel to race toward the kid. He watched as the bundled up boy ran through the snow toward Rapunzel. She just stood there with a blank look on her beautiful face.

The sand pulsed around her.

"Punzie! Where were you? Sophie missed you!" The little boy ran towards his baby sitter with his arms wide, a smile on his face.

Rapunzel lifted her hand towards the child only her arms shook as if she was trying to pull it back down. Black sand swirled around her and for the first time Jack saw her brow scrunch, her lips twitch. Her hand was in a fist and slowly unraveled, the fear sand swirled around her fingers.

Jamie slowed down once he was close enough to see the different color in her eyes and the familiar darkness he had faced only a year ago. His brown eyes widened,

"Rapunzel..?" he said softly.

"…r-r-run." she whimpered through her blank mask.

A pale hand wrapped around her wrists, pulling them to her chest as the winter guardian stood behind her, chest pressed against her back in a forced hug. He kept her hands to her chest by wrapped his arms around her petite body.

"I-I’m c-cold." she said, her voice still monotone.

"I know." he whispered against her hair.

Slowly white crystals started to bloom from her wrists, fern like patterns moved over her skin, ridding her body of the darkness slowly. The patterns turned her skin a deathly white along the way, the crystals formed together freezing her slowly.

"Jack what are you doing?" Jamie asked, watching the scene before him with big scared eyes.

"The only thing I can do." he replied. The ice traveled up her arms, the snow at her feet began to move into her skin, killing off the black sand inside her and leaving the crystallizing fern like designs on her paling flesh. Soon her eyes opened and they were the green that they knew. Tears started to fall down her cheeks as she shivered against the boy who held her.

"I-I’m sorry.." she said softly, "I d-didnt w-want to hurt y-you."

Jacks heart clenched and tears stung his eyes, He leaned his head against her, still able to smell her natural floral scent even though it began to fade. He embraced her, letting his powers do the work of saving her from the darkness. Saving Jamie.

"I know, Punz, I know." he said softly.

She smiled though her lips were turning blue, her cheeks losing color. She leaned her head against his, listening to his heart beat as hers softened.

"Y-you always k-know J-Jack." she said softly, "D-Do you k-know the s-song, t-the o-one I-I-I.."

"You are my sunshine…my-my only sunshine…" his voice was soft, barely heard except to the ears of the girl in his arms. His voice broke in some places while his emotions took over. "You make me happy, when…skies are gray…”

A small smile came to her lips as she closed her eyes, the ice crystals formed and covered her body, the darkness purged from everything except her slowly beating heart.

"J-Jack! Stop it! You’re hurting her! STOP IT!" Jamie screamed yet he was too afraid and shocked to move.

"You’ll never know…" he grit his teeth at Jamie’s screams, his own tears fell into her hair, "…how much I-love you…."

"Jack stop it! S-Stop Jack! Y-you’re killing her!"

"Please…d-dont take my sunshine…away.."

The darkness was purged from her soul and her heart. He moved away from her frozen body, slowly lowering her to the snowy forest floor. She looked unreal, an ice sculpture of the palest kind, fern like designs danced around her skin and clothes. She looked like she was made of  the whitest marble, her arms crossed over her chest like he held her and her lips in a small smile.

Jack knelt next to her as Jamie sobbed. He leaned down and placed his lips to her cool forehead.

"Please..don’t take my sunshine..away.."
