"Did you ever feel lonely?" Jack asked Repunzel as she looked away from him while stroking a lock for her long hair.
"Sometimes." she answered quietly into the darkness of her tower. The moonlight streamed in and cast shadows on her painted walls, yet there was no real shadow for the boy who laid in bed next to her. They were both apart of each other, curled on their sides so that they could look at the other even in the darkness. Sometimes despite her painting and colors, sometimes he was the only color left.
He was a mix of blues and silvers, beautiful and cold at the same time. His smile reminded her of fresh paint, his eyes of the blue sky that she had watched over and over. He smelled of pines and fresh water. She felt that if she touched him, he would feel of steel behind layers of silk.
The boy before her seemed ethereal, like he would disappear at any given moment. It took months for her, a sad creature of her own imprisonment, to trust that he would return even if it were only for a night. he had found her at her worst, crying after being rejected from the outside world once more. He had no idea that in her loneliness she had doused herself in fairytales, opened her mind to things if only to have a hope that she wasnt so alone. He thought that she couldnt see him, but she did.
"Do you feel lonely?" she whispered in return.
It was the same question they asked each other every time he would return from a long trip around the world. They would simply need to know. Two beings in the world that needed to know if the other understood that their existence relied on each other.
He reminded her of the stones of her tower.
"Sometimes." he whispered back, his pale fingers playing with the piece of golden hair, wrapping it around only to let it fall limp once more. The silence wasnt scary anymore. Silence was normal, she knew silence like a lover that caressed her to sleep every night and kissed her eyes every morning. Pools of green met the ice waters of blue and neither looked away.
"Am I the only one still?" she whispered, her eyes begging selfishly that she was.
He gave her a small smile, one that quirked the corner of his pale pink lips in a way that had her heart beating far quicker than it had been. She ignored it. Instead found herself reaching out her hand to touch his softly. She watched as he closed his eyes in that moment and savored the feel of skin to skin. He always did that, as if touching her was like walking into sunlight.
"Yes." he whispered, opening his eyes slowly as he spread his long fingers to intertwine with her own.
He reminded her of thick blankets.
"Do you miss me?" he asked softly. Their game was a mix of reassurances and selfish questions, asking for heart to be stroked. It was a game for the lost children, the ones who cried alone and learned to smile at their own reflection.
It was her turn to smile, small but there. She wondered if he could see it in the dark.
"Yes." she breathed, as if the words came from her lungs themselves, a message sent straight from the core of her being. His fingers were cold against her skin, causing goosebumps to rise on her arm but she didnt care enough to let go. She wondered what his hands would feel like on her body, would she be able to warm them with her touch. She’d bet that he felt like a summer breeze, cool yet leaving a warm wake of flame behind with every touch and kiss. Did he think of her the same way?
"Will you always come back?" she whispered to him.
His grip tightened on her hand and he moved forward so that he could rest his cool forehead against her warm one. She sighed at the feel and closed her eyes. His brown clothes reminded her of autumn yet whenever he was close she could only think of snow. Snow was pure, it was constant and needed in order for spring to come.
He reminded her of medicine.
"Yes." he whispered to her softly, "Can you…please?"
His soft quiet plea made her look up at him through her eyelashes, watching the lines of his young face deepen with desperation. He was broken. He cracks along his soul, isolation broke down the strongest wills in order to breed loneliness in dark crevasses. The girl with the magic hair closed her eyes again, listening to the sound of his heart beat as the night was quiet if only for him to hear what he so desperately needed.
"Jack."
"Again."
"Jack," she said softly. There was a moment as he took in her recognition like a drug, inhaling and exhaling the sadness as if it was that easy, "I see you."
"I see you." he replied softly, his voice cracked a bit and he held her hand tighter, "I see you."
He reminded her of a mirror.
