I sit on the couch listening to the conversation between Stiles and his dad. They're always so hilarious. Stiles says, "I know his family left town around the time Theo was nine or ten, his older sister died in an accident when he was eight."
The sheriff sighs. "Please go to school."
"Dad, this kid's a werewolf."
"Your best friend is a werewolf. You are dating a demigod. I still don't know what Kira's supposed to be. When the flying monkeys come soaring through this station, you will have my undivided attention. Until then, just go to school."
Stiles stays and the sheriff meets my eyes. "There's something about Theo that I'm suspicious of. He very well could be a werewolf."
Sheriff lets out an annoyed sigh and Stiles looks to his dad in confusion. "What did you do?"
"What?" He looks down at his uniform and back up. "What do you mean, "What did I do?"?"
"There's something different about you."
"What are you talking about?"
Stiles then goes a step further and starts sniffing his dad. "What is it? What's different?"
"Stiles, don't be weird. We need to get to school."
Sheriff groans. "For the love of God, Stiles, just go to school. Listen to your girlfriend."
Stiles points a finger at his dad. "I will go if you promise to do a full background check of the Raekens."
"No. You know what? Just because I'm the only law enforcement officer who knows anything about this, does not make it my responsibility to do something every single time you have a minor suspicion."
"Hey, I have a minor suspicion too!" I protest.
Parrish appears in the doorway. "And they're not the only ones."
I smile sweetly. "Deputy Parrish, since you have a suspicion, would you be willing to do a background check on the Raekens?"
He nods and returns my smile. "Of course. I'll let you know what I find."
Stiles grins in awe while the sheriff narrows his eyes. "Parrish!"
On the drive to school, Stiles says, "I've never been able to get one of my dad's deputies to do something. How did you get Parrish to do what you wanted?"
"Because I asked sweetly and adults love me. So, Parrish's background check showed a speeding ticket and nothing else. There's something about him that makes me suspicious."
Stiles nods. "Speeding ticket signed by Theo's dad eight years ago."
"Which I just said. What are you implying?"
"Who speeds?"
"Pretty much everyone. How many tickets do you have?"
He shoots me a smirk. "None."
I raise an eyebrow. "And how many would you have if your dad didn't bail you out?"
"Seventeen."
Stiles holds my hand as we walk up to the front doors. "Meg? What's wrong?"
"I never thought I'd be here this long. I've never survived a year in a close, let alone, a year and a half. I've always been kicked out. It's just weird. I'm going into my senior year. Theo still makes me suspicious."
"So you've said plenty a time."
Malia sees us glaring and guesses it's about Theo and asks, "Want me to torture him?"
