Chapter 14 – Will You Marry Me?


Lucy couldn't believe what she had heard. She had just finished crying her eyes out, hoping that she had cried out the pain with no avail. She called Levy and told what had a happened and listened as she ranted on and on about how of a jerk he was but somewhere deep down told her he wasn't. The last look Natsu had given her before she walked out with Lisanna and Bickslow was one of confusion and absurdity. She almost thought that he had no idea who this woman was and that he was not at all concerned with who she thought she was.


"Natsu, what in the world was that?" Grandine and Wendy almost slapped him in front of all the guest's at the party.


"Mom, you've got to believe me that I have no idea about who that woman is or where hell she came from. I have theory that she's insane." Natsu tried defending himself but so far his mother nor sister would believe him.


"You know big bro, you are the greatest idiot in the world; Lucy is way awesome and you let her walk out of this party by herself instead of walking away with her and leaving that psycho chick alone. Apparently, she thought it was funny to play a prank and crash the banquet. Are you sure you're not married to someone already big bro?" Wendy teased and poked his arm.


"You know that's not even funny Wendy. You and I both know that I would never do that, especially with a weirdo like her." Natsu trying to put his point through to her.


"So you wouldn't propose to Lucy? Your Uncle Atlas is going to cook you as one of his dishes if you don't marry her soon." Natsu looked at his mother with terror, knowing that his Uncle would have his head especially since he declared how much he loved Lucy already.


"Yeah, I been thinking about it for a while; was it the same with you and dad? I mean, you guys were married in like two weeks and have been married for like twenty-two years. How did you guys do that?" Natsu couldn't help admire all the love that he saw his parents have and hoped that maybe he could have it too with Lucy.


"You laugh and you forgive; that's about it kiddo. You may not remember it but me and your dad used to get into some really heated arguments and we would seethe for a bit and then just look at each other and laugh about it later." Natsu couldn't help but smile and think about how Lucy must be feeling right now.


"I'm going to Lucy's, don't wait up mom and Wendy." He grabbed his keys and rushed out the door.


Lucy stabbed her spoon into the contents of her bowl of ice cream hoping it would feel better but she couldn't help but feel worst eating the strawberry ice cream that reminded her so much of Natsu. She heard her apartment door open realizing that only Natsu had a key to get into her apartment and the doorman knew who he was so he just let him in. She stood up automatically out of response when Natsu came, welcoming him open arms but now her open arms opened her up to an imaginable heartache. Natsu came in with her favourite flowers, Lilies; she looked at the assorted bouquet with fire lilies, stargazer lilies and panther lilies making the bunch of flowers brighten up the already dull room.


"Lucy, are you okay?" She wanted to walk over to him to punch him yet she felt the irresistible urge to kiss him and drag him to bed and cuddle. Lucy was feeling too conflicted but she was sure that she loved him and that wouldn't change in any way right now.


"What are you doing here?" She tried sounding cold.


"Lucy, we both know that cold doesn't suit you. So, come over here and I'll warm you up." Natsu stretched his hand out hoping she would take so he could explain what happened at the banquet. She reached for his hand but before she could hesitate, he pulled her close to him and locked lips with her so she could feel his love not on just a physical level but on an emotional one as well.


He pulled her to the kitchen where he started taking out ingredients to make homemade chicken soup. She looked on as he started thawing out the chicken and cutting up the vegetables, she couldn't help but smile at the sight of him about to cook soup.


"So what happened tonight after I left the banquet?" She walked over to hug him around his waist.


"My sister and mother told me off about why I didn't walk out with you." He chuckled.
"You should have." Lucy bit her lip, "are you really married?" She braced for his answer only to be pulled into one of his warm hugs.


"Baby, I'm gonna tell you a funny joke; I starts out that the girl of my dreams is with me at this really fancy banquet but in barges this woman I don't know and she says that she married me and the girl of my dreams walks out and I don't get a good-bye kiss or a good night loving before she goes. Anyway, this woman walks up to me as drunk as can be and says that she came to crash the party out of a joke. Her name is actually Cana and I didn't know that she was dating Baccus." He looked down to see the relief and tears in her eyes as if someone had had taken the weight of the world off her shoulders. If the same had happened to him, he would've burned down a bridge but that was just his way of dealing.



"You know, I had something really important to tell you but we were so rudely interrupted by our friend Cana, I didn't get the chance." Natsu said trying to be as cool as possible.

"You guys are friends now then?" She laughed the thought of making a new friend like that but he was so good at making friends, she fell in love with him and after their first date.

"Yes, yes we are but skip that," he turned off the stove and pulled Lucy over to the couch where she could sit down, "this for you and you're supposed to wear it everywhere you go by the way." She smiled down at the box, looking at the size she thought it was earrings.


"Oh really Mr. Dragneel and why should I?" Lucy opened the box anticipating Natsu to give her the little trinkets she adored but only to find an engagement ring. Lucy knew Natsu loved the colour red, all his favourite toys were red but she didn't expect the most beautiful Ruby stone with smaller diamonds surrounding the bigger, more impressive jewel.


"You should do it because I want you to Mrs. Dragneel." Lucy watched as Natsu get down on one knee and take the ring out of the box. "I fell for you the moment I saw you and I am madly in love with you Lucy Heartfilia and I can't get over the way you make me feel and I am crazy for you. I literally can't go anywhere and not think about you. So, will you do I the honour and marry me and love me for the rest of forever?"


Lucy was speechless, she knew she loved this guy and loved his house and closet and family and sister and she knew that someday that maybe, just maybe, she would want to be with this guy forever but she didn't know that forever would creep up under her nose and smack her with a ruby ring. Lucy gave the ring another look before she looked at him. Natsu was hoping that she wouldn't take so long to answer the question but the suspense was killing him completely and he couldn't wait any longer.


"Lucy, are you gonna give me an answer?" Natsu took the ring from her and gently placed it on her finger, thinking that maybe if she saw it on her hand that she would give an answer.


"Natsu, no."
