Chapter 3 – Deadlines

Yesterday was her mother's birthday and Lucy was feeling very good for today, wondering what the day had in store for her. She couldn't help but think that that was probably the best conversation that she had ever had with Natsu in the week that they had been working together. She walked into the office with her head held high; she was wearing the perfume she had gotten for her birthday.

Lucy spent the morning deciding on outfits, knowing what Natsu liked to see on her especially since he had told her himself what she looked prettiest in since she had started working with him. She wore a pink cashmere sweater with a deep cleavage and her faded denim jeans with her knee high black boots. She wrapped her scarf around her neck, grabbed her jacket and walked out the door with a lot of confidence on her shoulders. You could say that she built up her own ego.

'I wonder if Natsu is already at my desk fidgeting with my stuff. He always looks so cute when he's trying to figure out how my Newton's Cradle work,' Lucy thought to herself, she gave up trying to explain momentum to him; she could've written a book about him and his very extraordinary personality.

She should make him the main character of her new children's book she would definitely get a kick out of him drawing himself and criticizing her characters. Not a moment sooner, she walked into her office seeing that the pinkette she had become so fond of wasn't there. She was a bit disappointed to see that was standing in an empty room, muttering to herself, "where the hell is that damn pink-haired annoying idiot? Where's my illustrator, now I got no one to disturb me?" she walked over to her chair and sat down.

"Oh, Lucy, it's seems we've become attached to our little pick headed disaster. I kinda miss him; at least he makes me smile early in the morning and smells like coffee even though I don't like to drink it." Lucy was babbling to herself like an idiot.

"So, you miss me, huh?" she heard a familiar voice behind her, she could only guess who it was.

'Great job for speaking so loudly.' Mentally slapping herself, she turned around to see the crazy pink headed mess staring at her then at her blouse then at her and then her blouse.

"My eyes are up here, dummy." He squatted in the chair when she scowled at him.

"Like this, right, eyes up there." Knowing that he would be getting on her nerves, but he didn't mind seeing her pout just a little, he absolutely loved her lips being a pretty pink that matched her skin but it didn't look unnatural. He laughed as she rolled her eyes; she picked up the cups he had set down on the table.

"Why two cups? Don't tell me that you're gonna splurge on coffee today of all days."

He was acting clueless. "What's happening today?"

"Natsu, the deadline for the first draft is today." She motioned over to the calendar where today's date had been circled. He knew what today was but he wanted her sweat a little. He was serious about his deadline though, they had to finish in time or else it wouldn't go through the proper channels of editing, setting and publishing in time for the next release of books. He knew how important it was to her when it came to publishing.

Lucy had told Natsu how important it was to make sure that they were there on time. When the book was printed and published, she would take a couple to the library and read to the kids who were there sitting around waiting for parents or older siblings to pick them up. She loved the reading and the amount of appreciation the kids put into listening and 'oohing' and 'awing' at her stories. She was think of maybe taking Natsu to the next reading of the book that she and he were doing together.

"Alright, let's get started on finishing this book." Lucy was a bit enthusiastic and finishing up, probably because it was the first time she would ever finish one early in the day but it wasn't the time to be slacking off. It was getting down to business and doing it right and when it was done, it would be done.

"I'm all fired up!" Natsu pumped his fist into the palm of his other hand.

"Maybe I'll use that in my next book." Lucy chuckled.

"That line is copyrighted, you know. I could sue," Natsu was smiling her now favourite smile.

"I'll make sure I have good counsel Mr. Dragneel." Lucy was certain that she could throw him off by flicking him on his forehead.

"Whatever you say Mrs. Dragneel." Lucy flushed pale and then blushed redder than Erza's hair. Natsu sat down handing her one of the cups; she took a sip of the warm liquid and realized that it chocolate milk.

'I wonder how he knew that chocolate milk is my favourite drink in the morning.'
