now on to the story ;)
Four tiny turtles sat before their father in the dojo, their legs crossed and eyes wide in amazement. Today was a special day, for their sensei was about to show them a surprise.
Splinter smiled, finding his sons to be extremely cute when they were excited like this, and he fiddled with the little box behind his back. He had managed to find a turtle in the sewers. He was about to just leave it and continue scavenging for food, but when he realized what a perfect teaching moment this could be for his sons he gave in and quickly put it in his bag.
"Today I have a surprise for you, my sons." he said calmly. Little Michelangelo couldn't sit still and was jumping up and down, causing Raphael to grab his arm tightly to stop it.
He took the box that was hidden behind his back and brought it to his lap. When he opened the lid he carefully took the turtle he had captured into his palm, and gently put it down on the floor for his sons to see.
They went out of their minds. Now it wasn't just Michelangelo, but all four of them were jumping and cheering. What they were cheering for, Splinter didn't know.
"It looks like us, daddy!" Leonardo exclaimed when he had calmed down a little.
"Wow, a turtle!" Raphael said and joined Michelangelo in petting it's shell.
This stopped Donatello in his tracks, and he stated matter-of-factly; "i's not a turtle.. i's a tortoise." Splinter was impressed by his young son's knowledge
"Whateva, it's cute!" Raphael snapped and continued 'petting' the tortoise.
"I have told you all before about how we came to be a family." Splinter stated, and the turtles nodded, now interested in hearing what their sensei had to say. "This is what you looked like before you... changed."
The four brothers grinned and looked at each other.
"I found this turtle when I went on my usual morning trip around the sewers. I wanted to show you it before I had to return it back." He explained to his younglings, letting them know that their guest wasn't there to stay.
"It doesn't look so good, daddy. I think he needs some food." Donatello piped up, looking up at his father with huge, brown eyes.
He hadn't thought about it, but the turtle did look very malnourished. He couldn't just leave it out in the sewers again. What did a lonely turtle eat in the sewers anyway?
"You're right, Donatello. Maybe some salad will help him feel better." he agreed with his son, and he couldn't help but smile when he saw the happy look on his young son's face.
"Let's go to the kitchen!" Michelangelo yelled out and started running out of the dojo, the others not too far behind.
Splinter looked at the small tortoise and sighed. He picked it up in his hands and started walking towards his sons.
After lunch for both a small turtle and bigger turtles, it was time to say goodbye to their new friend.
There was crying and wailing, mostly from Michelangelo, but Splinter wasn't going to give in that easily. His boys had been acting a little spoiled lately, and he couldn't give in to their every demand.
"Pleaseeeeeee let him stay" Michelangelo whined for the hundredth time, crocodile tears rolling down his cheeks.
"I already said no, Michelangelo. He must go back to his home." Splinter replied once again, denying his sons' requests.
"But this can be his new home!" Leonardo suggested. The hope in his eyes made Splinter slightly cringe, because he knew he was about to break it in mere seconds.
"For the last time, no."
His sons wailed for a few more minutes, but eventually gave up and went to play. All except one.
Splinter was washing up after lunch when he heard small footsteps entering the kitchen. He turned around slightly and was surprised to see a red banded turtle coming towards him slowly, with his head down. It wasn't often Raphael wanted to talk to him alone, so this was a bit of a surprise.
"Hello, Raphael." he greeted his son, but was a bit confused when all he got was a sniffle in return.
"Is something the matter?" Splinter asked, his voice layered thick with worry.
Raphael muttered something incoherent, but when Splinter asked him to speak up he looked up at his father and shouted. "PLEASE DON'T TAKE AWAY SPIKE!"
"Spike?" Splinter asked.
"The turtle.. his name is Spike. I know because I named him." Raphael was very obviously proud of the name he had given the turtle.
"Ah. Well, I don't think we can keep him here." The rat master explained to his young son, not wanting to upset him and start another tantrum like before.
"Why not? He could eat salad here all day, and he doesn't have to live in the scary tunnels all alone... he can be our pet, daddy!" Puppydog eyes were his sons' special weapon. Splinter was incredibly weak to it.
"What will I do when you get bored of him? You got bored of the balls I brought you, you got tired of the boardgames I fixed for you, and now you want a pet?" Raphael looked a little guilty when Splinter said this, knowing it was true. "This is a living creature, like you and me. Don't you think he would be sad when you get tired of him?"
"I promise I'm never ever going to get tired of him! I'll feed him salad every day!" Raphael puffed up his chest, wanting to show his father how determined he was.
Splinter thought about it. It wasn't exactly a hard pet to care for, and if his sons ever got tired of it, he could always just put it back in the sewers where he first found it.
He sighed. "Alright, you may keep him as a pet. But you must promise me to take good care of, er, Spike."
His leg was suddenly clamped and a thousand 'thank you, thank you, thank you's were thrown his way.
Despite the constant noise and rather uncomfortable weight on one of his legs, Splinter couldn't help but chuckle at his adorable little turtle.
and that's how Spike became a part of the family! ;P
