Riley awoke to the familiar feeling of exhaustion, but also something else. A tug in her gut, a simple instinctual feeling that something big was about to happen, like a storm brewing.
She replayed what had happened in her mind. It didn't make any sense. Thomas in a lab coat, like he was some sort of Doctor. Weird. And something about a best friend and a brother?
She had a brother.
That thought was prominent in her mind, but she pushed it aside. There were other things to deal with. Like the sensation in her gut, a twinge at the back of her mind that told her she needed to go and look out of the window.
The medic room she lay in was completely empty of life. She carefully rolled over, and walked to the window, the burning sensation she had felt when she had broken down now nonexistent.
She held onto the window frame as she peered out, just incase she collapsed again. The Glade was bustling with activity, boys lugging wood, hacking at weeds, talking, eating. It struck her once more at how good a civilisation they had managed to build and obtain.
Her eyes locked onto one lone figure with a mess of brown hair, walking towards the deadheads. Thomas. Riley swallowed, the pull in her gut growing stronger. She could somehow sense that something was about to go down in the deadheads- and she needed to be there.
Without a second thought or any hesitation, she pushed the door open, creeping down the stairs, relieved to find the homestead empty. As soon as she made it outside, she ran towards Thomas, not even needing to think about it.
His figure disappeared from her sight. He had entered the deadheads- but so had someone else. Thomas was in danger.
She slipped between the trees, finding a suitable hiding spot, deciding to wait for whatever was about to happen. Thomas sat down, looking dejected. She wanted to go out and comfort him, but memories of her dream prevented her. He had done something- what, she didn't know- but something she would never forgive him for. The deep hatred in her dream self's eyes gave that away. Riley's body went tense as she heard crunching footsteps not far off. Thomas didn't seem to notice.
Her breathing hitched a little as Ben stepped from the shadows. He was a nice guy- she'd only spoken to him a few times, but even so she would have considered him as a sort of friend. He was also a runner- lean, tall, athletic, and strong. But there was something wrong. His eyes were empty, his face sickly pale, his limbs tense.
Thomas looked up. "Um.. Hello?" He said, surveying the boy. Riley wanted to scream at him to run, but she held her tongue. Whatever was about to happen was important.
Ben didn't say anything. He just lunged, a feral scream escaping his mouth. Riley watched on, frozen in horror, as he pinned Thomas to the floor. Thomas shouted for help, desperately kicking the boy off of him.
Riley couldn't move. It was like she was glued to the spot, her brain barely processing what was happening.
"It's all your fault." Ben hissed, kicking at Thomas. "You. You did this to us. You deserve to die!" Thomas looked around desperately, hoarse screams echoing through the trees. Riley snapped back into action, shaking her head to get it out of its daze.
She crashed out from her hiding spot behind a tall tree, throwing herself at Ben. The force knocked the elder boy of Thomas, who scrambled back, his eyes wide. Riley jumped up, backing up as Ben growled at her.
"What are you doing?!" He screamed. "I could've killed him, easily by now! Don't you remember what he did to you? Don't you remember your sister, Riley? It was him! He did it, he killed her! He's the reason we're here." Ben rambled, his voice different than usual, more venomous, dripping with acid.
Riley's head spun. Sister? Thomas killed her sister? She didn't even know she had a sister, yet alone that she was dead and the boy on the floor only feet away from her was responsible for it. She slowly turned to him, appalled, confused, emotions bubbling inside of her. It was all too much.
"You- you killed my sister?" She chocked out, her tone disbelieving.
Thomas gulped. "I don't know what he's talking about! I don't remember anything at all! You've got to believe me, Riley, I have no idea what's going on!"
The moment the last word escaped his mouth, Ben shoved Riley onto the floor, and turned to Thomas. Riley didn't have the energy to get up. Her vision danced as she backed up against a tree, throbbing pain erupting down her side.
She barely processed what was happening as the two boys wrestled, shouting and screaming. It was like someone had turned the volume of the world down so it was barely audible. She did notice when Newt, Alby, and a few more Gladers ran onto the scene, another ache erupting in her mind as she watched Newt with half closed eyes.
The world blurred as Ben was pinned down, and someone helped Thomas up. The one thing that grounded her to reality was Newt's hand on her shoulder, asking her if she was okay, what had happened.
"I'm fine." Her voice came out as a low, hoarse whisper. She wasn't fine. She wasn't anything near fine. But she didn't say anything about it. As Newt helped her up, she glanced over at Thomas, who caught her gaze. She broke her vision away, a feeling of heartbreak ricocheting through her.
She didn't understand. Thomas and her sister. Minho and their strange, sibling like connection. Newt and the roller coaster of emotions she felt towards him. None of it made sense.
But she knew one thing; everything was going to change.
