The zombies were everywhere. Hundreds of them. They looked vaguely human, except their skin was rotten and dirty, their hair matted, blood and wounds covering them.
It seemed they had lost all sense of human nature. Their actions were animalistic and heartless, tearing one another apart, lunging and wailing.
Riley stood, watching in horror, beside Newt, Minho and a little girl- Isabelle. Isabelle's eyes were wide with fear, her hand clinging to Riley's.
Minho was the first to snap out of it. "C'mon, guys, we need to run."
"Yeah." Newt muttered, his face pale and sickly.
Riley swallowed the urge to throw up. "Yeah. Yeah. We have to get outta here. Come on, Iz."
The four of them ran, and, as they did, the zombies started to follow them. Newt cursed, and Isabelle started crying, tripping as she ran, Riley hoisting her back up again countless times. Minho urged them on, throwing a glance over his shoulder. He swore and swooped Isabelle up, placing her atop his shoulders. Newt caught Riley's hand, pulling her along. "F-faster." He panted. "Faster."
Fear overtook Riley as they sprinted for the big white building that would be their sanctuary. The zombies yelled from behind them, causing Riley to almost fall, but she picked herself up again.
Suddenly, Riley's leg was tugged from underneath her, and she was dragged back by a pack of zombies, away from
Newt. Isabelle was sobbing, Minho was shouting, Newt shouting and starting to run after her. But there was nothing they could do.Minho caught Newt's shoulder. "Hey, Newt, we gotta leave. There's nothing we can do."
Newt opened his mouth, then closed it. He took one last look at Riley, withering and screaming and crying for her friends under the grip of the vicious cranks, tears pouring down his cheeks. He turned away.
Minho turned on his heel, clinging to Isabelle, and left his sister to the cranks.

Riley woke up screaming, reminding her of her first night in the Galde. She quickly covered her mouth with a hand, pressing her lips together, trying to soothe her panic. It wasn't real. It was just a dream. Just a dream.
"Riles?"
Riley shivered, tucking her head into her arms, convinced she was still in the midst of a dream.
"Hey, Riley?" Someone touched her leg. Reflexively, she kicked out, shooting upright and backing into the corner.
"Sheesh, Riley. Remind me never to wake you up like that again." Newt grumbled, clutching his arm. He was crouched the other side of the bars, key in hand.
"Sorry." She mumbled. "I didn't mean to." Sweat beaded her forehead.
"Hey, it's fine. Nightmare again?" Riley nodded, shivering. "Yeah, thought so. You were yelling mine and Minho's name- and someone called Isabelle."
Riley swallowed. "It was nothing. I'm fine. Go back to the homestead."
"It was something, you're not fine, and there's no way I'm going back to the homestead." He shrugged, unlocking the door. He crawled in beside her, crossing his legs.
"You're annoying, you know that?"
"So I've been told."
"Just go away." She sighed.
Newt shook his head, leaning against the far wall of the cell- which wasn't really far, seeing as it was such a confined space. Even sitting cross legged, their feet nearly touched. "You know, blocking people out doesn't get you anywhere. Spent a good portion of my life doing that, look where it got me."
Riley frowned, curiosity overwhelming annoyance. "What do you mean?"
Newt's face was mainly hidden by the darkness of the night, but Riley could tell his expression was sad and far away, staring at the floor. "Ever wondered where this limp came from, Riles?"
Riley blinked. "I don't kno- yeah. Yeah, okay, I've wondered."
"Two months back-" he chocked on his voice. Whatever it was was obviously a sore subject.
"You don't have to tell me, you know. You barely know me, after all. I get it if it's something personal."
Newt sighed. "Riley, I get the feeling I do know you. Like, before this whole thing. Anyway, I used to be a runner. I've been here since day one. For me, it was depressing. Sad. Lonely. I couldn't find a reason to live anymore."
Riley blinked again, watching the older boy intently. She couldn't find the words to say anything, so she stayed silent.
"Two months back, I jumped." Newt's tone was full of emotion, his voice cracking at the end of the sentence.
"You.... Jumped?" Riley repeated.
"Yeah, I jumped. Right off the maze wall. I didn't die. Alby found me and dragged me back just in time. I wanted to die. I was so angry that I couldn't even manage to kill myself, I was that much of a failure."
Even if Riley could've found anything to say, her throat was too dry. Emotion overwhelmed her, and a single tear traced down her cheek.
After a long moment of silence that seemed to drag on endlessly, Newt swore. "Shuck it. I've ruined it, haven't I? Our friendship. Oh, God, I should've never told you. You're probably disgusted at me. You probably hate me. Look, I'll leave-"
He went to stand up, but, before he could, Riley leant over, filling the small gap between them, cupped his cold face in her hands and crashed her lips against his.
At first, Newt stiffened. Then he melted into the kiss, his arms falling by his side. His lips tasted salty but somehow sweet at the same time. Riley could have stayed like that forever. It seemed so right, like fitting pieces of a jigsaw together an finally completing the puzzle.
Riley pulled away first. "Newt, I don't hate you. Sure, I hate a lot of things right now. The creators for putting you here, this place, myself for not being there. But not you. I could never hate you."
"You don't... Mind?" He stuttered.
"No, I don't mind. What matters is that you're still here, not what's happened in your past. You're still alive."
"Thanks, Riley." And he meant it. Riley shuffled so that she was sitting beside him.
"Newt?"
"Yeah?"
"Minho's my brother."
"Okay." Newt's voice was sleepy and dazed, and he clearly hadn't processed what I had said. "Wait, what?"
"Minho's my brother. I keep getting these dreams, flashbacks, and we're brother and sister. And when I looked at him- I just knew."
Newt didn't look too shocked. "I knew there was something between you guys. The way you looked when you first saw each other- either you were siblings or lovers. I was just hoping it wasn't the second one."
"Why?" Riley frowned, resting her head against his shoulder.
"Because I was kind of hoping that spot wasn't taken." He smiled, and pecked her lips again.
"Well, it might be now.." Riley shrugged, wriggling into a lying position and leaning her head against his chest.
Newt grinned. "I was hoping you'd say something like that."
"Get some sleep, Newtie."
