"Do you miss them?" Axel asked. He and Riley sat in a small room, containing only a bunk bed, a closet, and a dresser. They sat either side of a pile of cards, Riley cross legged, Axel hugging his knees to his chest. The question was sudden and out of the blue, but Axel had been pondering the question for a long time.
"Who?" Riley asked, confused as she glanced up from her deck of cards.
"Newt, Minho, all the others?"
Riley exhaled deeply, her breath shaking little as she gripped the cards. "Course I do. All the time."
Axel shook his head. "It's just not right, sending teenagers in there, you know? And making you fall in love just to study you and Newt's brain patterns. You can't just force two people to love each other."
Riley shrugged. "I know it's not right. But we're too deep in this mess just to back out now." But she thought the same. Newt and her had been really close- but falling in love with him? After not seeing him for so long, the idea seemed ridiculous. And forcing love? It was sort of scary that WICKED could do something like that without caring in the slightest.
Axel nervously shuffled the cards in his hands. "I know, I know. It's just that... What if... What if you hate me when we meet again? Because we'll be like, strangers."
Riley grinned, flicking a few of her cards at him. "I could never hate you, doofus. Best friends, right?"
Axel smiled thinly, but his eyes told the truth. Soon, they would part ways, and, soon, their memories would be taken and their relationship would be ruined forever.
Soon, they wouldn't even recognise one another, let alone be best friends.
