“I can’t believe his mum already fucking left!” Luke fumes, his eyebrows pulled together in anger and distress.

“She had to go back to work.” I tell him, quietly.

“That fucking bitch! No wonder Ashton wanted to kill himself. It’s all her fucking fault!” Luke yells, tears springing out of his eyes.

“Luke, calm down.” I tell him gently, pulling him into my arms as he cries into my shoulder.

“I don’t get it.” He manages between tears.

“Mr. Irwin is ready for his visitors.” The nurse says, facing us. Luke pulls away immediately, wiping his eyes. Calum and Michael simultaneously stand up from their chairs. “He’s a lot better than he was last week when he was brought in. I recommend keeping the talk of his condition to a minimum. Just try to distract him and let him know how happy you are to-”

“Don’t fucking coach me on how to talk to my fucking best friend!” Luke snaps.

The nurse flinches and I grab Luke’s wrist. “Calm down or they won’t let you in.” I tell him through gritted teeth.

“Sorry.” He apologizes quietly to the nurse, who just nods. She tilts her head and we follow her into the hospital room. Luke’s hands twitch nervously at his sides with every step we take.

She opens the door and I step inside, exchanging an awkward look with Ashton before stepping to the side. Luke steps in, Michael and Calum close behind him. He takes one look at Ashton before bursting into tears, a string of curse words flowing easily from his mouth. Calum and Michael grip onto each other for dear life as they look at Ashton, tears blurring their vision.

“What the fuck, man?!” Michael yells at Ashton, wiping his eyes and taking a step towards the bed.

“Hey guys.” Ashton says with a small smile.

“What were you fucking thinking, you asshole?” Calum asks with a broken laugh. He walks over to Ashton’s bed and gives him a hug, Michael joining in seconds later.

I look over at Luke, who’s still standing in the doorway. His hands are clenched into fists as his side as his shoulders rise and fall quickly with every cry he’s letting out.

“Luke?” Ashton asks, quietly.

Luke doesn’t answer. Instead, he looks over at me, his eyes wide. I take a step towards him and he grabs my hand tightly, his hands shaking. He turns his head and looks back at Ashton. His teeth are gritted and he’s breathing heavily.

“Luke, calm down.” I tell him, gently.

“What the fuck?!” He yells at Ashton. “What the fuck were you thinking? Did you think you could just leave me here, you inconsiderate asshole! You can’t just leave me by myself! You’re my best friend! You fucking shit faced idiot!”

“Luke, stop.” I tell him, firmly.

“Val, do you have any idea what he did to me?” Luke asks, his voice shaking. “Do you have any fucking idea-”

“Yes!” I cut him off. “Because he did it to me too. And Michael. And Calum. And every fucking person that cared about him! So just calm down, Luke! He did it to all of us! Not just you! Now stop being an asshole and just hug him!” I say, my voice cracking.

Luke rushes to Ashton’s side and wraps his arms around him, sobbing into his shoulder. Ashton winces slightly as he shifts on his bed and wraps his arms around Luke. Soon, both of them are sobbing messes. Calum and Michael are sniffling in the corner of the room and I stand there, a blank look on my face.

I want to tell them. I want to scream that their best friend is leaving tomorrow. I want them to feel every single bit of pain that I’m feeling. But I don’t say anything.

So we just stay still.
