"What is that?" His mother's voice brought his attention to Veronica as she held a croissant

"A chocolate almond croissant from Bean & Beluga.
Unfortunately, I only have one." She played coy as Mateo smirked at the situation at hand. Veronica was ready to get under someone's skin and it seemed she was targeting their mom.

"The other thing, Veronica." Hermione gritted her teeth knowing already what it was.

"Oh, this. A mimosa. There was a bottle of champagne in the fridge just begging to be popped." She smiled before sipping the drink.

"Okay, that was a bottle of Cristal for your father." Her eyebrows furrowing before Veronica's cellphone rang stopping her from continuing.

"Sorry, I have to take this." She unapologetically stayed as she grabbed her phone.

"If that's your house guest from last night-" Hermione warned as Mateo rolled his eyes at the obvious distaste at Cheryl.

"It's Betty." Veronica interrupted as she rolled her eyes as she picked up and held the phone to her ear.

Mateo ignored them as his phone alerted him to a message.

I'm downstairs

"Bye Mom" He got up, kissing him mom on the cheek before he grabbed his keys and wallet as she turned to him.

"Where are you going?" She shouted as he was already out the door.

"Out!" He shouted, closing the door and missing his mother rub her temple. Running down the stairs, he waved at Smithers before easing down to a simple jog.

"You know you don't have to pick me up. I can drive, you know." He smiled as she turned to him.

"Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" She patted the seat as he rolled his eyes before sitting.

"So what did you tell the firefighters after I left?"

"That I was asleep and mother had been returning from the Jubilee. Seeing the house in flames, she ran in saving me." Her nose wrinkling at the recollection of the lie as she drove.

"If only they knew she ran in for that dreaded family portrait she adores so much." Her lips forming a scowl as she thought about the reality of the situation.

"Hey, did you come from the hospital?" He noticed the same dress from yesterday covered in soot as her face was clear of the grime from yesterday.

"Mother and I were examined. They started treating her and started some skin grafts as well as removing any debris from the burns." She glanced at him as he cocked his head.

"And you still came over to pick me up?" He asked as she shrugged.

"I needed to get away from the stench of smoke" She casually spoke before turning a right.
