What the hell just happened? I'm here not a full twenty-four hours and the leader of this place all of a sudden thinks she is on top of the pyramid. Does she seriously think that I am a threat to her? Know what? I'm not gonna let this ruin my morning.
I went to the health triage, pushing the tent flaps out of my way, and found Donnie is being examined by Lin. My friend, Aber is eating two boiled eggs and drinking a small glass of water to fill her empty belly.
Amber chewed away at the egg whites in her hands, greeting me with her mouth full. "Morning, Osa." She says. It seems like Amber is starting to warm up enough after learning about her brother's death. If she is talking, I take it as a great sign.
"Morning," I say, clearing my throat with a confident smile.
As he pushed up his glasses, he asked if I had gotten enough sleep last night. "How'd you sleep?" He said, letting Lin examine his chopped arm.
I sat on the bed, coming close to his body. "Good."
Don nods, glad to hear I got some rest after a long journey. See anyone out there?"
"Uh..." I mumbled, thinking of the people I had seen just a few minutes ago. "Patience, Mikey, and his girlfriend, Shado."
Laughing lightly, Donatello also winced at the pain as Lin was finishing up his bandage change. He also thought it was funny and unbelievable that Mikey had found someone to spend the rest of his life with. "He had to get wrangled up somehow." He grinned at me.
As Lin, the generous doctor of the community placed the sling over Donnie's shoulder, she dismissed him from the health triage. This meant he could leave and take a walk outside and get a look at this place. I think it'll be good for him. Before we approached the exit of the triage with Amber, I look up at his six-foot-tall frame. "Did you eat breakfast?" I asked him.
He nodded. "Lin brought scrambled eggs and toast."
Then, having a second thought, I wanted to make sure that Donnie wasn't too stressed about going outside to meet some people. He needs to be comfortable about this. "Would you like to see the place? It's not too bad here."
Don could see the light peeking through the inside of the lightly lit triage, seeing people pass by. He frowned, thinking he may not have the courage. "I don't know. I hear a lot of people out there."
Over time, I believe Donnie developed a sliver of PTSD, enough make him feel like he needed to avoid certain things-- even people. There's a way to help him out of this but it'll take some time for him to fully heal from his events. I stand up and extend my hand out to his left hand. "Come on. I'll keep you safe if anyone comes too close." I grinned.
One side of Donnie's mouth tugged into a smirk, engaging great eye contact while sliding his hand into my hold. Just before I proceeded to go outside, Amber went out first, feeling the warm sun on her face and smelling the fresh air. Then, I push away the flaps of the triage, walked out into the open, and revealed a few clusters of humans and mutants; big small, and different sizes with unique abilities. It's literally a civilization.
A few had yellow eyes, green eyes, white eyes, and even lavender. A few mutants were rhinos, dogs, raccoons, reptiles, mammals, and all could talk. The constant chatter between people kept the whole community busy, making me feel like there really is hope for the...well, the human-mutant race.
The sunlight only blinded us for a split second, but our curiosity was spiking through the roof. Donnie and I have never seen so many new faces-- especially ones who were animals or had odd-looking features on their person.
