Chapter Eighteen

Starlene, Mason, and I entered the throne room and found that Court had already gathered.

Starlene and I sat down on our thrones and Mason stood next us on the raised platform. He was Sorina's intended Consort, which allowed him to stand with us.

"We have found the Queen of Twilight," I declared.

I glanced at Lady Pennington and saw nervousness in her eyes. Did she know that she was about to be caught?

"Is she alright?" Lord Bell asked. I wasn't surprised by his concern. He seemed to genuinely care about me and my family.

"She's fine and she has told us the identity of those responsible for her kidnapping," I replied, "Lady Pennington and Nadia, step forward!"

Whispers could be heard all over the throne room as Lady Pennington stepped forward.

"Where is Nadia?!" I demanded as Starlene scanned the throne room.

"I'm right here, my King," Nadia replied as she stepped forward.

She was smiling. Why? Didn't she realize that she was about to be severely punished? Something was off, I could feel it.

"Lady Pennington, Nadia, we have been informed by the Queen of Twilight that you both betrayed the crown," I stated, "It seems you are both responsible for the kidnapping of the Queen of Twilight and informing Marius about the Queen of Stars' pregnancy."

"Yes I am responsible for those things, my King," Lady Pennington admitted, "But Nadia has done more than that. She informed Marius of the King of Night's location and his new Consort."

Nadia glared at Lady Pennington. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised. Nadia had been desperately wanting to be Stefan's Consort for years now. Sorina had been right, Nadia had found out about Emberly and now wanted revenge.

"As you know the High Council of Vampires doesn't take kindly to traitors," I told them as black flames appeared at my feet, "Prepare for your punishment."

Nadia smirked.

"On the contrary, Your Majesty, it's you who will be punished today," Nadia said with a cruel smile. The throne room doors burst open and in came Marius, Hayley, William, and six dozen Hunters. The vampires in the room scattered and ran for safety. I cursed under my breath. So much for Cygnus Keep being secure, but at least Selena was safe along with most of my family.

"Mason, get out of here," I told my youngest sister's intended Consort, "Go to the North End of Blackfell. There you'll find the Flower Valley, Tatiana's castle. Tell Sorina what's happened here. Star and I will fight as long as we can. Now go!"

The Hunters charged at us and Mason ran off. As I watched him rush out of the throne room, I sent a plea to the souls of my parents and Alexandra, begging them to watch over Mason. He was the only person I trusted to tell the others what was going on in Cygnus Keep.
