I rode my bike up Mike's bumpy gravel driveway, and to his farm. As I arrived to his house, I propped my bike up on a tree, and walked up to his front door. I knocked, then patiently stood and waited.
Finally, after a moment, Mike's grandmother opened the door.
"Why hello Stany!" She said happily, her cracked lips breaking into a large grin. Stanley had tried to get Mrs. Hanlon to pronounce his name correctly, but it was in vain. Besides, she was too sweet to hold a grudge on.
"Come on inside, baby, Mikey will be in from the barn in a while."
Stanley nodded and stepped through the front door and into the Hanlon's kitchen.
"Go sit right there inside baby, just whichever seat you want," Mrs. Hanlon ushered Stanley into the sitting room.
"Thank you Mrs. Hanlon," Stanley told the elderly woman.
She giggled. "Oh Stany you're so sweet, but please, call me Bertha."
Stanley smiled back at the woman, and he walked into the sitting room.
"Would you like a cookie young man?" Bertha called from the kitchen.
"No thank you," Stanley called back.
"Ok I'll bring you one in just a minute baby!" She said from the kitchen.
Stanley bit back a laugh. Crazy old woman he thought.
Bertha shambled in to Stanley, and handed him a warm chocolate chip cookie.
"Thank you," he said happily, biting into his cookie.
Bertha sat across from Stanley in a plush armchair.
"So Stany, you're here for Mikey I suppose?"
"Um, yes ma'am," he told her.
She shook her hands over her head. "No ma'am business, it makes me feel old."
Stanley giggled the tiniest bit. "Sorry Mrs. Bertha," he said.
"Ah it's quiet alright. So, about Mikey..."
Stanley shifted around in his chair. "Oh right, I-I was just coming to see if he wanted to go out to a movie, or get some food?"
Mrs. Hanlon nodded. "I think he'd like that. The poor boy doesn't get out much."
Stanley nodded in agreement, taking another bite of his cookie.
"I think Mikey fancies you," Bertha said.
Stanley choked on his cookie. "Wha- really?" Stanley asked, almost excitedly.
"Mhm, he always talks about you."
Stanley felt himself grinning and blushing like an idiot, and Bertha stood up.
"I'll go get him for you, ok? You can have another cookie if you'd like."
"Thanks..." Stanley murmured, lost in thought. I can't believe he likes me too!
Bertha walked out of the house and into the scorching sunlight, and glanced around, looking for her husband or her grandson.
She heard the distant scream of sheep, and knew that her husband was probably making more Mikey kill those sheep. Why doesn't that man understand Mikey has seen more death than he should've at his age? She asked herself angrily.
Bertha marched as fast as her wobbly legs would carry her to the slaughter house.
She stalked into the barn and saw her poor baby Mikey holding the bolt gun in a shaky hand as Homer lectured him loudly and angrily.
"I can't do it!" Mikey whimpered.
"Listen here son!" Homer said. "You're either in there with them," he gestured to the sheep, "or you're out here, with us!"
"Homer Hanlon! You leave that poor baby alone!" The sound of Bertha's shrill voice caused both the men to jump. "You know there's plenty of other work he could be doin' instead of you lecturin him bout not being able to murder a sheep!"
Her husband opened and closed his mouth multiple times, but couldn't back his reasoning. "I'm sorry ma," he eventually said.
Bertha continued to glare at her husband of forty five years for another moment before she turned to Mikey.
"Come on baby," she said. "Somebody's here to see you."
"Really?" Her grandson asked. "Who?"
She smiled softly at him "Stany."
"Wh- oh Stanley?" Mike asked excited.
"Mhmm," his grandmother said. "Go get him, he's in the house."
She smiled as she watched her grandson run to the house at breakneck speed.
"Is it that boy?" He heard Homer grumble behind her.
"Yes it is. And that boy has a name. Stany."
Bertha watched Homer roll his eyes, and just wished her husband would accept Mikey for who we was.
She stood out in the sunlight for a moment longer as she watched Mikey and Stany walk out of the house hand in hand, stopping to grab their bikes, and make their way down the driveway. She smiled, hopping the happiness between the two would stay, then sighed.
"I'll see you later Homer. Is potatoes ok for dinner."
She received a grunt for a reply, so she just walked away and back to the house.
