"How lucky i am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." —
Winnie the Pooh
I watched eagerly as Stanley glared at Ben. This was exactly the kind of popularity I needed.
I saw Ben glance nervously at Stanley. "Uhh, hi Stanley..."
Stanley glanced up at him, rolled his eyes, and looked back down, before turning on me.
"Bev, this is actual hell. Can you just pick one of us and let us go?" He asked huffily.
No silly boy. If the other boys at school think I have you two fighting over me, they'll start to fight over me too. "I'm still thinking about it," I said, smiling a soft smile and batting my eyes.
He glowered at me. "Good god. You're impossible."
My mouth dropped open. "Stan," I whispered, truly hurt."
"Beverly. Look at this, you cheat on me, try to get back together with me, but still don't get back together with me! I'm not the bad guy!"
He got up and stormed away from the table, leaving his untouched lunch.
Tears of humiliation filled my eyes. He was right. Of course he was right; he was never wrong.
"Don't listen to him babe," Ben said, sliding closer to me.
My eyebrows pinched together. "Don't. Call. Me. That."
"What?" He snapped at me.
"I said don't call me that!" I hissed. I got up and stormed off, blinking back tears.
I barely made it through the rest of the school-day, and breathed a sigh of relief as the three o'clock bell rang.
As I stepped out into the light mist, I felt a hand on my shoulder.
I squeaked and spun around on my heel, coming face to face with Ben.
"What the hell was that about at lunch?" He snapped.
I opened my mouth, wondering what words would come out. "Get your hands off me!" Were not the ones I was expecting.
"What did you say to me?" He growled, raising his hand as if he were going to hit me.
Suddenly, Stanley was in between us. "Leave her alone Ben," he snapped. "Just leave her alone."
Ben was taken aback for a second time, but stepped back, and walked away.
"Stanley, thank you so much," I began to cry.
"Don't mention it," he said, and began to walk away.
"No like you don't understand, thank you-"
"Seriously," he cut me off. "Don't mention it."
I held my tongue, not wanting to make him mad. I followed his for a while, just looking at the ground.
"Can we just talk?" I whispered.
He sighed. "Yeah, I guess we should. Do you- do you want to go to my house?" He asked, sounding like he already regretting asking.
I nodded my head. "Only for a little while. Just so I can explain."
All he did was nod.
I sat on Stanley's bed, looking everywhere except him.
"I'm sorry Stanley, I really am. I shouldn't have cheated, but it's too late now. I don't know what got into me, I feel like a total piece of shit, and I know you don't want to get back together with me, but I really miss you-"
He wrapped me in a hug. "I forgive you, but it's not something I can just forget, ya know?"
I nodded my head, leaning into his hug.
"We can still be friends though if you'd like," he continued.
"I'd like that," I whispered, feeling a genuine smile on my face for the first time in a while.
I'd take being friends over being nothing with him.
I picked him on the cheek. "Thanks Stanley," I whispered.
