"- she said yes!" I squealed happily. I could immediately see the heartbreak in his eyes.
"O-oh... that's-that's great Ben. I'm happy for you." He covered his eyes with his hand.
"What's wrong Eddie?" I asked, growing worried for him.
"N-Nothing, Ben. Just a headache," he reassured me with a shaking voice.
"Are you sure?" I asked him.
He nodded. "Yeah. Yeah I'm fine."
His voice was so fragile and weak. "I hope you aren't getting sick Eds," I said finally.
"I'm not." He paused for a minute. "Y-you've gotta get ready for your d-date. You need to g-go."
"Oh, right!" I said. "I'll swing by later ok?"
He weakly nodded. "See ya."

I quickly jogged the two blocks from my house to Eddie's house. I couldn't wait to tell him all about the date. It was perfect, Bev was perfect; we had another date planned for next week. I had never been happier.
I placed the ladder hidden in Eddie's bushes up against his house and began to climb up.
The window was open but his room was pitch black. "Eddie?" I whisper-yelled, stumbling as quietly as I could to his dresser and flicking on his lamp.
He lay there in his bed, covered in at least five blankets and snuggling an old teddy bear— the last gift he had received from his father before he died.
I looked closer at his face. His cheeks weren't their usual rosy color, and his eyes looked puffy and swollen. Even his hair didn't look as fluffy as it usually did.
My face dropped. He looked seriously sick.
"Eddie," I hissed, shaking his shoulder. "Wake up."
"Huh-what?" He sleepily asked. His eyes fluttered open, showing off his bright red eyes.
"Are you ok? Why are you asleep so early? What's wrong you look sick," I bombarded him.
He blinked curiously up at me. "How was your date?" He asked eventually.
I stared down at him suspiciously. "What's wrong with you?" I asked him seriously.
"What are you talking about?" He asked me defensively.
"Jesus Christ don't jump down my throat. I'm just trying to see if you, my friend, are ok." I rolled my eyes hard.
We sat in silence for a minute.
"I'm ok," Eddie sniffled. "How was your date?"
"Oh Eddie, please don't cry. I didn't mean to raise my voice at you," I apologized.
"That's not why crying. But p-please don't leave me in suspense. How-How was it?"
I could think of no reason as to why he was crying, so I just answered. "Oh Eds it was amazing. It's perfect. She's perfect. We're actually going on another date next week," I rambled excitedly.
"Oh... that's great Ben. I-I'm so happy for you," he said unhappily.
"Eddie what's wrong?" I demanded again.
"Nothing..."
"Then why aren't you happy for me?" I snapped angrily.
"W-What? What do you mean? Of course I'm happy for you!" He cried. "How could I not be?!"
I wrinkled up my nose in disgust. "You sure don't act like it."
"Ben, you-you don't understand how happy I am for you... you're happy. That means I'm happy," he pleaded.
I just rolled my eyes.
"Ben I love you please don't be upset with me I just want to see you happy!"
He gasped and covered his mouth with both hands.
I looked at him with pure disgust. "What are you, a fag?"
"N-no," he whimpered meekly.
"You're fucking pathetic Eddie Kaspbrak," I spat, standing up from beside him.
"Ben," he sobbed. "I'm s-so sorry!"
"Don't ever talk to me again you freak, or I'll tell all our friends," I snapped.
He stared wide-eyed up at me. "N-no. Please don't."
"Don't ever talk to me again then," I said with a shrug, and began to descend Eddie's ladder.
I heard him sobbing on my way down, but I didn't care. I just walked away with out a care in the world and my mind on the beautiful Beverly Marsh.
