"Walls have ears.
Doors have eyes.
Trees have voices.
Beasts tell lies.
Beware the rain.
Beware the snow.
Beware the man
You think you know."
— Songs of SapphiqueI took a deep breath and blinked back tears as I shakily dialed Mike's number. He answered on the second ring.
"Hello?" His soft, warm voice filled my head, easing the panic that was eating away at my insides.
"H-hey Mike, it's me. Bev. Umm I have a really big test Monday that I really need to study for... can I come over?" I was making up the lie as I went, hoping he bought it.
"Of course, Bev, what ever you need. You remember my address right?" He asked.
"Yes," I breathed, as I heard my front door open. "Bye. I'll be over soon."
"Who was that Bevvy?" My father's rough, always-angry voice asked.
"My friend, Michelle," I lied. "We have a study date for the big chemistry test tomorrow."
He walked into my room, glaring obviously at my outfit. "Alright, but I want you home at three at the absolute latest."
I nodded my head, knowing the consequences would be bad if I didn't follow his rules. "Yes daddy. I'll see you later."
I pecked him on the cheek and sped walked out of the apartment. My chest loosened up as I walked out into the early morning sunlight and over to my bike.I made it up Mike's dusty gravel driveway in record time. I set my bike up on its kickstand, and walked up to the front door and knocked.
After an antagonizing moment, the door finally swung open. I felt my face break into a grin as soon as I saw Mike.
"Aw, shucks kid. You don't always have to look so excited to see me," he chuckled.
"But Mike, you are my favorite person."
We both laughed, and he opened the door wider to allow me in.
He motioned me to follow him, and I noticed him limping. "Mikey, what happened?" I asked him.
"Oh, I fell. Henry and his goons were chasing me last night through the woods. But I'm ok," he reassured me.
I nodded my head. "Ok. I'm sorry you fell..."
He waved his hand, and pulled a chair out for me to sit in. "I'm fine Bev, don't worry about me, let's just worry about your test. Where are your papers?"
Shit. Oh fuck I left my whole backpack at home. I'm dead. I'm so dead.
Mike waved his hand in front of my face. "Woo hoo, Bev?"
I felt tears flood my eyes. "I-i forgot my bag..."
"Hey it's ok, don't cry about it. Do you remember anything on your paper?"
I shook my head again, and began crying. "I l-lied..."
"What?"
"I l-lied about have a t-test. My dad was out d-drinking all night, and he always h-hits me when he drinks... I didn't wanna have to d-deal with it again," I sobbed. "Please don't be mad."
Mike wrapped his arm around me. "Shh, shh. It's ok. I'm not mad, I promise."
I sniffled and nodded my head. "Mike, you're such a great friend, I don't know what I'd do without you."
He smiled and blushed. "Thanks Bev," he whispered. "You know id do anything for you."
I smiled back at him. "I know."
