"I don't need to be the best, just your favorite." —
Bridgett DevoueI woke up to the loud beeps of an alarm clock, and Mike groaning with frustration.
"What time is it?" I groaned.
"Three thirty. Go back to sleep kid, it's too early for you."
"It's too early for you too Mike," I exclaimed, throwing back the covers and placing my feet on the cold hardwood floor.
"Eddie-" Mike started. "Just go back to sleep."
"Why?"
"Because, I work on the farm. And I'd really rather you stay here."
I opened my mouth to argue more, but the suddenness of his bedroom door pretty much flying open made me snap it back shut. I was his grandmother.
"Good morning babies," she said. "Mikey you can go back to sleep, your grandfather said you could have a day off today, as long as you promise to work hard tomorrow."
With that, she walked out. Mike flopped face down on to the bed.
"You don't care if we sleep for a few more hours, do you?" He mumbled.
I giggled. "Nope. Sleep as long as you want," I told him.
We woke up around seven in the morning to bright sunlight filtering in through the windows.
"So," Mike asked. "What do you do on your days off? Hang out with friends?"
A laugh escaped my throat before I could stop it. "I-uhh I don't have friends Mike," I explained quietly.
"Oh."
We sat in silence for a moment, before he continued. "What would you do if you had friends?"
I thought about it for a moment. "I don't really know. I've never thought about it," I told him honestly. "Maybe just walk around town maybe."
"Let's do that then," Mike said, hopping up from the bed.
"Ok," I said, smiling. We biked into town, ditching them in an ally beside a meat shop Mike and his family worked for.
"What first?" He asked excitedly.
I paused, biting my lip. It had been years since I'd been able to do what I wanted. "Let's go to the arcade!"
We walked at a brisk pace to the arcade, which was just a few blocks from where we had stood.
"I've never been to the arcade," Mike told me.
I gasped in shock. "Really?" I breathed.
He nodded. "Yup."
I grabbed his arm, and began dragging him quicker.
"Come on, come on, it's so much fun!"
He giggled, speeding up his pace. "You're so funny Eddie."
I felt myself blush, and I cursed my pale skin. "I- no I'm not," I said stubbornly.
Mike just giggled again.
Finally, we reached the arcade, and walked in. It smelled like sweat and french fries; happiness.
"What first?" I asked Mike, who was looking around in pure wonder and amazement.
"Everything," he said with a laugh, and I joined in.
I laughed up at him. "Ok but what first?"
"Hmm, how 'bout this?"
He stopped down to my level, the presses his lips lightly to mine. It was all a matter of seconds; nobody saw. I couldn't stop the giggle.
"Now what?"
"What do you want?" He quietly growled in my ear, and I felt myself shiver.
"You," I breathed.
