The doctor informs us
that I am
leaning towards
overweight.
I avoid
Mom's staredown
as she questions
how this
is possible.
She insists that
she feeds me right
and makes sure
I don't
eat anything that
will bloat
my organs,
that I get
plenty of fiber
so I don't get
constipated.
She frets because
she tries
so hard
to keep me healthy.
She just
doesn't know that
sometimes
she is the only one
trying.
The doctor
begins to needle me.
He asks about
my eating habits
and after awhile
I give in
and confess
how often
I eat junk food
with friends
and how sometimes
I eat too much
because I am
just hungry.
Sometimes
the small meals
aren't enough.
The doctor
promises
this is because
I am growing.
He says that
the heavier
I get,
the more difficult
it is
for my body
to breathe.
He tries
to scold me
in the
nicest way
possible,
but it still lands
bitter
on my heart.

Because the truth
makes you
bleed;
whether you
sit in it
or share it.
