Kjrsten thinks
I have "learned enough"
to go back
to Group.
She says I am
still struggling
with understanding
some concepts that
she wants
me to,
and that
at this point,
Group can be
helpful again.

So I return
to the hospital,
with its
unnaturally sterile
smell that
gives me a
shudder
and the choking
white.

Group is
in a room
painted blue,
designed to
be soothing,
like anything
can make
Dying Kids Group
better.

I am
welcomed back
warmly,
and Bea,
my closest friend
from Group,
slaps her
hand down
on an empty chair
next to her
as we file in,
saving a spot
for me.

We originally
connected because we are
the only ones
in Group with
lung diseases.
(She has
Cystic Fibrosis.)
She is
one of my
favorite people
of all time
because of
who she is
as a person.
When I was
stressed about
my date with
that kid from
the football game,
and him
finding out that
I'm not normal;
barely even
human—
she tossed
her hands up and said,
"Who cares?
It's not like
you'll ever
talk to him
again,
and if he
has a problem with
your COPD,
he's the one
suffering over it,
not you."
I pointed out that
I am the one
suffering from
COPD,
and she
reminded me that
it's only
a suffering
if I let it be.
