After
a night of fun,
we all
dive into
sleep so
"Santa" will come.
Morning comes
and we
wake up to
Jason
and the smell of
coffee cake.
Breakfast
is delicious
but slows us down
because
even when you're
thirteen
or seventeen
or anything
in between,
Christmas
never loses
its magic.
We tear into
Mom's handmade
stockings and
nearly wrapped
presents,
beheading
paper snowmen
as wrapping paper
splits and flies.
I get
more college
stuff but
Mom
knows me well
and threw in
a box of
fake mustaches
and hats
to decorate
Frederick
as well as
new versions of
shoes I've been
"borrowing"
from her
for months.

I don't get
my license back
like I
asked for.
Maybe
next year
I'll be
high enough
on Dr. Brimmond's
Nice List
to get
what I really
want.

Last are
our gifts from
Grandma and
Grandpa Jeff.
Jason has
Jeff's help
opening new outfits,
and Sam
actually smiles,
but it's as if
the smile
is supposed to be
a secret,
so I don't
say anything,
but instead
smile secretly
myself.
The Sisters
are overly excited
about whatever it is
they get,
but by then,
I've peeled
mine open
and fallen silent.
Inside
a small
jewelry box,
is a locket.
I open it
delicately,
and find
those same
pictures
I know
are in
the matching lockets
of The Sisters.
On the left,
Grandma Jeff,
and on the right,
Grandpa.

They are
telling me
I
belong.
