The bell rings and
Cadence and I
split up
for class.
I call after her
to tell her
I'll give her
a solar system
of love.
I head
down the hall
and she troops
outside into the
cold, hard air
toward
the school farm.
Graceful, dainty
Cadence
is raising a
pig
to sell at the
State Fair.
Last year,
she cried when
her pig
got sold,
knowing its
fate.
This year,
I know to bring
tissues.
I've already made
an adorable
tissue box
holder.

AP Government
is somehow
more boring than
when I
literally watched
the paint dry
when we all
were moving in
to the new
house
because I'd had
an attack
and was
far too
worn down
to unpack.
But I'm
taking it
because it
looks good
on applications
if I pass
the test.
I kind of
doubt
I will,
since it's
excruciating
and I can barely
bring myself
to pay
attention,
especially with
my foggy cold
brain.

Halfway through
the period,
things get
interesting.
And not because
the three branches
of government
have become
my new fascination,
but because
my tics
and my coughs
are at war
with each other
and then
I begin to feel
as though
I might
pass out.
