The dark drive through the strange unfamiliar neighborhood was silent as the occasional streetlight lit up the inside of Pete's car giving me a glimpse of Pete's all black outfit like my own.
"Do you know how beautiful you are?" He asked as he took his glance away from the road a moment to look at me. He squeezed my hand in his as he smiled.
"Why don't you tell me." I laughed.
"You could kill a guy with your looks alone." He said.
"Your such a liar. I'm just a big nerd." I said.
"I'm not. I've always thought you were pretty Autumn Jane." He said and the car went quiet again before he pulled onto the side of a street in this suburb we were in. He shut off the car turned to me.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He asked looking at me deep in the eyes. His face looked nervous and hopeful at the same time. I didn't see the smooth talking, sure of himself Pete I had been seeing.
"Alright." I agreed.
"Just to verify, you just agreed to be my girlfriend right?" He asked like he didn't believe it.
"I did" I laughed.
"You have no idea how long I've waited for that." He chuckled then kissed my cheek making me smile. "You ready?" He asked and I got the backpacks from the backseat.
"Yup" I answered and we got out of the car.
We made our way through an alley until Pete stopped at a big brick house. He took his lock picking objects out of his backpack and had the door open in no time. We walked in the house where we separated and I went upstairs to raid what ever I could find. I checked under the beds, dresser drawers, and spilled out jewelry boxes into my backpack. I took watches necklaces, rings and tried not to imagine the story's behind the possible anniversary or Christmas presents from the people that loved them the most. Love isn't about material objects though, thinking that made me feel less guilty. I didn't know if Pete ever thought about these objects while stealing them, I wondered how he justified this in his mind. To be honest I think I was just doing this to hang out with Pete.
I found a small stash of cash in the master bedroom closet and threw it into my backpack as I heard a loud boom from down stairs. My body began to fill with panic as I herd
"Drop what you have, and put your hands in the air!" What do I do? Could I save Pete? I couldn't. I would feel bad for leaving him but I knew he would be pissed if I didn't. I picked up my backpack and searched for my exit. My body shook as I spotted a window with an awning just under it that I could jump from.
I opened the window as quickly as I could and crawled out looking at the drop below me. Before I could even wonder if the fall would hurt I had already jumped. My legs hit the grass hard but my adrenaline made me get up and run back into the alley I had came from. I herd sirens, more police were on their way. My breathing was harsh as I ran with the gravel of the alley crunching beneath my feet. The street where Pete's car was parked came into view. I got into the drivers seat noticing that the keys were in the ignition, probably for situations like this. I threw my backpack into the back seat and started the car. I turned on to the street where the house that I just robbed was. This might be risky but I just had to see. As I neared the brick house the red and blue lights were visibly flashing. Pete was pressed against a cop car as an officer patted him down. He noticed his car as I drove past and just stared blankly. I looked in the rear view mirror as they stuffed him into back of the cop car, handcuffed and looking at the ground. As I drove back to the Wentz house I felt like crying as what I had just seen replayed over and over in my mind. The little curly haired boy who use to protect me was handcuffed, patted down, and put into a police car.
I snuck quietly into the house and stuffed the backpack under my bed and put on pajamas before heading back down stairs. I couldn't sleep after what had just happened. I went into the kitchen and got a left over brownie before staring unto the fridge mindlessly. I heard a noise scaring me a little making me close the fridge.
"Hey." The voice said. I turned around to see the silhouette of Hillary in the dark. She looked to be fully dressed as she got a brownie too.
"Hey." I said back with my voice cracking a little.
"I'm guessing you listened to me and didn't go with Pete tonight." She said
"Yeah, I decided to stay home." I said a little sadly.
"Good." She said then walked off.
I went back up to my room not knowing what to do next. I sat on my bed a moment and looked at the clock, It was two in the morning. The rest of Pete's band should know about this, I debated on calling Patrick now but I didn't want to wake him up.
I played back in my bed and started to cry for some reason. I guess I just felt alone.
