"Well do you like her?" I asked him.
"No, she's so mean. I don't know why she's doing this but it isn't very funny." He said.
"She didn't seem too bad today." I shrugged.
"I just don't know. You know me feelings are towards someone else." He said giving me a half hearted smile.
"I'm going to be gone as soon as I can, Patrick. I'll probably never be coming back." I said. He was silent for a while.
"I know." He said and took a deep breath.
"Go back down there and maybe put your arm around her or something if you want." I said. He gave me a sad look but turned and went out my bedroom door. Once he was gone I laid in my bed. Everything felt as though it should be. I got my phone out and dialed my parent's number.
"Hey AJ." My mom said
" Hey mom."
"I just wanted to say we're sorry for lying to you and not telling you what was really going on. I know its kind of childish of Dale and I to do this to you and Pete." She said.
"I never wanted this princess!" I herd my father shout in the background.
"Guys, its okay. You just wanted to give me an opportunity here, I understand that. It just isn't working out here, I'd like to come home, put in some college applications and grow up." I said.
"College?" My mother asked intrigued.
"Yeah, I've done a lot of thinking since I've been here." I laughed.
"Well, if you've thought of a better path for your life you can come home." My mom said. I felt like I was bargaining with my mom, but it was working.
"When?" I asked.
"We can't do a plane ticket, but we can get Dale to drive you home Friday." My mom said. I could tell they hadn't really thought about getting me home which made me sadder.
"What happened with you and Pete?" My mom asked.
"There was never a me and Pete." I said sort of sadly.
"I'll talk to Dale tonight and see what she said" my mom said. I hung up the phone without returning my mom's I love you.
I was finally getting to go home, with strings attached, but still home to Michigan. I got off my bed and began to pack my things, when it was time I wanted to be ready to go. I heard a soft knock on my door then the creak of it opening.
"Are you leaving?" Hillary's voice asked.
"Friday, maybe" I replied. "Where did Patrick go?" I asked.
"I thought he was up here with you, you were both gone when I woke up. Why have you decided to leave?" She asked now sitting on my bed and watching me pack.
"I don't know, I just want to leave. To tell you the truth I really don't want to go home either." I said.
"I wouldn't blame you, your parents are being jerks." She said. "Hey! If you could go anywhere where would you go?" She asked.
"New York I guess." I shrugged.
"Well, let's go!" She said and I began to laugh.
"Were both still seventeen and neither of us have money." I replied.
"Oh yeah." She said in realization.
"I don't think I'm ever coming back to Illinois." I said.
"I figured as much." It was silent in the room for a while. "I'm sorry I was always mean to you, I guess I just wanted to be as close to you as Pete was." She said suddenly.
"I understand." I said everything went quiet again and I herd her walk out of my room.
When I got done packing I called Patrick.
"Hey" he answered.
"Hey, why did you bail?" I asked.
"I don't know, I guess I didn't feel like hanging out with Hillary." He said.
"Hey, it's your choice." I said. "I actually called to tell you I'm probably leaving Friday." I said.
"What? Why? I thought everything was fine." He said confused.
"Its, I just- I can't-" I struggled to find the words.
"You don't want to be here" Patrick finished for me with a hint of sadness in his voice.
"Yeah." I said. "This place is hell, Patrick"
"It's not Illinois, its Pete." He said
"Or maybe it's just me, everything was fine before I got here." I said.
"I think its better with you here." He said. "If you want to leave because of Pete why can't you stay because of me? Or Hillary, or because your parents are crazy, or any other of the reasons that out weigh and out number Pete if I'm not enough?" He asked.
"Do you understand how hard it is to sleep a room away from the guy that dumped me?" I asked and he went silent.
