Raiya's POV:
I stared down at the piece of paper in front of me on the table, a heavy sigh coming out of my mouth. I felt someone come up from behind me, a fake smile instantly making its way onto my face.
"You know you don't have to do that in front of me." a female's voice said from behind me.
My smile dropped as I looked behind me to see my only friend Yukiko standing there with a frown on her face.
"Oh, it's you," I mumbled, taking the bag out of the seat next to me.
"Don't act like that," she said while sitting down. She took a look at my paper, her face scrunching up. "Seriously? Another perfect? Why are you such a try-hard?"
I flicked her forehead, shaking my head.
"I can't help that I'm smarter than you."
"Tutor me, Raiya!"
"You know how that turned out last time. We weren't even five minutes in before you started complaining and fell asleep on my bed."
"B-but..."
"No buts. You got a C so it's not that bad. When you actually need help, I'll think about tutoring you."
I heard the sound of voices coming closer and the same fake smile from before made its way onto my face. Yukiko had an unamused expression on her features.
"You know you don't have to keep up that act right?"
Before I could answer, a few students made their way into the library, eyes settling on me.
"Good morning, Raiya!"
"Good morning, everyone!"
They all took their seats a few sears in front of me and a frown replaced my smile.
"Kiss-ups," I muttered.
Yukiko snortled next to me as she doodled onto her paper.
"Just because your mom is well-known, doesn't mean you have to act like this."
My mom was a florist and she's well known around the neighborhood, making a lot more money than a normal florist would.
"I know but I don't want to give her a hard time. I'm lucky that she cares for me more than other rich moms do so I want to pay her back somehow."
"Whatever you say, Rai. One day, someone is going to make that mask of yours fall and that's the day you owe me $10."
I rolled my eyes and stood up, grabbing her arm.
"Let's go home."
She nodded and we headed out of the small school, the soft rumble of thunder echoing through the night sky.
"What the hell? Didn't they say we would have clear skies today?" I said.
"Let's just hurry home."
We ran and soon reached our neighborhood in five minutes. I waved at her from across the street before heading into my house.
"I'm home," I yelled.
"In here, honey!"
I walked into the kitchen to see my mom making dinner and my father sitting at the table, watching some TV.
"Welcome home, pumpkin." my dad said.
"I'm home dad, mom."
"How was school?" my mom asked.
"It was the usual, annoying classmates and teachers."
"Since you're here, I have news to tell you guys." my dad said.
"What news?"
"My boss says that if we watch his sons for a few months, he'll give me a higher raise along with some other benefits."
"Sons?"
"He has six."
"SIX?!" I yelled.
"Yup."
I was about to protest but his face said he was looking forward to what his boss had to offer. I sighed, rubbing my forehead.
"Fine but make sure they don't bother me. I don't have time for this."
"But they're your age. I need someone to guide them around the school and get them used to living in this house."
I felt an irk mark appear on my forehead but I took a deep breath and nodded.
"You owe me, dad."
He nodded, going back to his TV.
"They arrive tomorrow night. I'll get the guest rooms ready."
I grabbed my plate of noodles, kissing my mom on the cheek.
"I'll be eating this in my room. It's late so I'll see you guys tomorrow morning."
"Goodnight, honey."
I felt something rub my leg and I looked down to see my orange tabby, Seb, looking up at me with his big green eyes.
"Hi, buddy." I cooed, picking him up with my free hand.
I gave my parents one last wave with Seb's paw before heading to my room. I shut the door quietly and let Seb go, his tiny feline body already making its way to the bed. I yawned and ate my food slowly as I sat at my work table, looking down at my chemistry notes.
"I hate this class," I muttered, flipping through them mindlessly.
My phone suddenly rang, startling me. I answered it, knowing who it was.
"What?"
"Hello to you too, grumpy."
"Tell me what you called me for. I'm busy studying."
"Don't get your panties in a twist Rai. I was just gonna ask you if you wanted to have dinner with us tomorrow."
"No can do, Yu. I have something to do."
"What could be more important than hanging out with your friend?"
"My father decided to let his boss's sons stay here and I have to be their babysitter's."
"Sons? Perhaps you'll find someone who will love you?"
"Highly unlikely. I swore off of boys after him remember?"
My luck with boys was really bad. My ex was someone who was very bossy, to the point where it got too much for me. I broke it off with him and he didn't take it very well, following me around the school and verbally abusing me. He would even wait outside my house for me before school and it got to the point where I had to place a restraining order. He moved away a few months ago.
"There's still that small chance."
"Ok, that's enough Yu. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Goodnight Rai."
I put my phone down, rubbing my face tiredly. I put my wavy blonde hair into a messy bun and headed to the bathroom. I looked at the appearance of myself, my pink eyes looking tired and dead.
"I'm a fucking mess," I muttered.
I quickly took a shower and collapsed on my bed, the clock reading 11 PM. Seb curled up on my chest and gave me a small meow before falling asleep. I pet his fur as my eyes became heavy, one last thought occurring in my mind before I gave into the darkness.
'I wonder what life will be like with those sons?'
