"Why are you doing this for him?" Killian faced me with anger. His fists were clenched, golden eyes darkening to a molten gold.
"I love him, Killian." My words seemed to punch a whole in his gut. He flinched and looked to the side but not before I caught the tears gathering in his beautiful golden eyes.
"After he neglected you, blamed you for things you didn't do, and took her side, you still love him?! After everything you went through..."
I didn't need to say anything. The beads in my hand were warm. He had helped me find the lost beads. I knew he was the only one I could turn to. The only friend I had left.
He came forward, towering above my weak form. I could feel him assessing my body, lingering on the bruises that lined my arm and neck. "What the fuck did they do to you?" His voice broke as tears slid down his face.
I slid the beads into the pocket inside my dress and reached up to cup his face. Using my thumbs, I wiped them away. His large hands came up and cupped mine, squeezing.
Suddenly, I was pulled into his chest as his face buried into the crook of my neck.
"Come with me, Mira. Don't go back."
I wrapped my arms around his waist. "I can't let him die Killian." I squeezed his waist. "I want to thank you. F-For being my friend. Thank you for being the light that chases away the darkness. Remember what you asked when we watched the plains on the hill? How the stars shone?"
I continued before he could answer. "One day..." I swallowed. "One day I promise you I'll watch the stars with you again. If not, then I wish the stars will shine just as bright when you watch them with someone else."
He shied away as if my words had slapped him. He held me at arms length, eyes looking into mine in desperation. "I need you to be honest with me. I-I need to know... did you ever love me?"
I looked away, tears rolling down my cheeks. "Killian..."
He took a deep breath, steeling himself. "If you didn't it's okay, at least you'll be happy even if it won't be with me. But if you did..."
I watched him. He was no longer the wicked prince I had first met back at the Lunar Celebration. That seemed like a lifetime ago. But could I have loved Killian if I had met him first? I would have. But he had already been dragged in too deep.
The beads in my pocket flared up as if reminding me of the crime I had done. Stealing the beads were a huge crime. The only punishment was death.
I did not want to ruin the Prince in front of me more than I had already. Unrequited love eats away at a person's soul. It's a parasite that feeds off the person's misery and turns it into bitterness.
