Once I got there, I packed all my things up in my back pack and made my way back. However, he stopped me in my path.
“I knew I would find you here” he said smirking
“Why?” I said quietly
“You said you liked it. Also, it’s our treehouse.”
“Our?” I questioned
“Don’t act like you don’t want it to be” he said hopping over to me with his broken leg. “Did you spend all night here?”
“Yeah, I had to get away”
“Yeah I understand. Weren’t you cold?”
“That doesn’t matter. Look I’m really sorry for what happened to your leg”
“Don’t be, it’s not your fault”
“It kind of is. If I didn’t do what I did and if I didn’t lie to you then you wouldn’t have been mad at me and got hit”
“Hit?”
“Yeah, by the ambulance” I replied now a little bit confused.
“I wasn’t hit my an ambulance”
“Then how did you break your leg?”
“Erm… I’ll tell you later. It’s a long story” he said not very convincingly.
“Aren’t you mad at me?”
“For what?”
“Lying to you”
“No don’t worry about it. I understand, you didn’t want to tell me because you’re scared” he said putting his hand on my shoulder with his crutch dangling from his elbow.
“I wasn’t scared”
“Come on even I was scared on my first day”
“I can imagine. Losing both of your parents bust be so hard.” I said to him
“You get used to it I guess”
We spoke for a few minutes until we heard a phone ring. It wasn’t mine. I didn’t even have a phone. I’ve never had a phone. It was Ryan’s.
“You have a phone?”
“Yeah the social workers give you one once you reach a certain age so you can keep in contact with them”
“Oh right who is it?” I asked
“It’s Paul” he said rushing to answer it. He put it on loud speaker:
“Hi” he said.
“Have you found Megan yet?”
I vigorously shook my head and signalled to him to cover for me.
“No, she’s not where I thought she was” he saved me.
“I will call the police then. Come back to the house”
“NO WAIT” Ryan said in a panic
“What?”
“I think I know another place where she might be. I’ll call you soon”
“Okay hurry please” Paul said just before Ryan hung up.
“Thanks for that” I said to him.
“No problem. Anything for a friend” he said as he smiled in my direction. I smiled back and said “I don’t want to be ‘found’ yet”.
“Why not?” He asked.
“I just want to be somewhere quiet. I hate being in a crowd”
“They’re not going to hurt you and I need to sit down because my leg hurts”
“Okay let’s go back then, I don’t want to cause you any more pain”
So we made our way back to the house along the road this time and as we turned the corner, we saw Paul walking this way. We tried to avoid him as Ryan wanted to take all the credit for finding me so before he could see us, we turned around and headed back to the treehouse. We couldn’t run because of Ryan’s leg so we had to walk quickly.
Once we got to the tree I climbed up first and he handed me his crutches. I put them to one side and I lay on my stomach with my head poking out the door with my arms dangling down to help Ryan.
He stepped on the first step and poked his leg out of the way so he wouldn’t hit it. I grabbed his arm and pulled him up each step so he could put his foot on it for balance. One he got near the top, I grabbed lower down his arms so I had more grip and pulled him up as hard as I could remembering that he had a broken leg.
Once he got to the top we stopped to catch our breath and we peeked out the window and Paul had just turned the corner. It was so close. He could have seen us but he didn’t. However, he stopped. I forgot that I had left my back pack down there and he had picked it up and was now running back the same way. I’m guessing he is going back to the house so that’s where we went next.
I got down from the treehouse first and called for Ryan to come down but he didn’t.
“Ryan you can come down now, I will lift you” I said but it still had no answer. I climbed back up to see what the delay was and Ryan was sitting there trying to hold back the tears.
I looked down at his leg to see a white cast that now had lots of blood all over it and his foot had been cut. Badly.
