David woke up with a bothersome headache and felt sick. At this point in time he was used to getting hangovers, being as he spent nearly every night at the bar since Maia went into a coma. He got out of bed and walked to the bathroom to get a warm cloth. He sat back in bed and put it over his forehead. David grabbed his phone from his side table and scrolled through his old pictures. He frequently went through the photos he had of him and Maia, but usually it made him sad. For the first time in forever, the feelings he got from looking through the photos were the opposite – it made him happy. Moments later, his phone starting ringing. He clicked talk.

“Hello?” he spoke groggily into the phone.

“It’s Cierra!” she beamed over the phone.

“Why do you seem so happy at ten in the morning?” David said, confused. He wasn’t sure why he was confused as it seemed like Cierra was happy all of the time.

“I have a friend I want you to meet. Her name is Amber,” Cierra said.

“Do I have to? I don’t really want to meet any girls…” David led on. He didn’t want to even speak to a new girl, the only girl he wanted was Maia.

“C’mon! She’s single and so cute. You’ll love her!”

“Fine,” David agreed, knowing Cierra wouldn’t give up until he said yes.

“Yay! Alright so she lives at 42 Wellington drive, near the park. She wants you to come to her house at around three. Is that cool?”

“I guess so. What am I even supposed to do there? Just talk?” David asked.

“Yeah. You used to talk with Maia for hours and hours, at least that’s what she told me. Anyways, have fun. Bye!” Cierra said before hanging up.

David threw his phone on the ground and groaned. He couldn’t just talk for hours with a random girl, he could only do that with Maia. He didn’t want to do anything with anyone if it wasn’t with Maia. He grabbed a pair of jeans and a clean tee shirt and walked to the bathroom to start a shower. As he was about to close the bathroom door, he heard a voice. Maia’s voice.

“Maia?” he said shakily. He knew she wasn’t here, she was in a coma in Australia. He took a quick look around the house just to make sure it wasn’t a girl trying to break in, and went back to the shower. He felt a shiver run down his spine when he realized that he would never hear her beautiful voice again.

Meanwhile, Maia’s parents and Charlie were sitting at their kitchen eating a family meal. They had a tradition in which they would have three sit down meals a week with the entire family. Without Maia, these meals didn’t seem quite right.

“Is Maia going to die?” Charlie asked, worried.

“It’s hard to say, Charlie. She’s just in a coma right now. She might wake up, she might not. We’re hoping she will, of course,” Jill answered, taking a bite of her food.

“It will all work out, bud,” Alex confirmed. You could tell the family was falling apart with the impending question of whether Maia was going to be okay or not. The not knowing part was really getting to Charlie. He couldn’t even go to school some days because of how sad he was. Jill, on the other hand, was putting up a strong face to the rest of the family. She would go about her daily life in the same way she would have if Maia was okay, but the family could tell she was falling apart inside. You could hear her crying in the living room nearly every night.
