She could hear the faint sound of the ambulance in the distance. Her eyes fluttered open and she brought her hand up to her face. She felt dried blood caking her face and she tried to wipe it off without any luck. Her arm began pulsing with a sharp pain so she put it down. She tried to move but it was no use. She closed her eyes again because it felt like it was too much effort to keep them open. She took short breaths as it pained her to breathe. She assumed she broke multiple ribs.
She could hear her heart pumping loudly against her chest as if it was trying to break free. For a split second, she wished she could give up. Just die; the pain was so much. Not only from the pain of the accident, but the emotional pain from the whole ordeal with David. She could hear the ambulance screeching to a stop and the members piling out to take in the damages and find any people involved in the accident. She could feel the paramedics picking her up and running her into the ambulance. She was laid down onto a table while they examined her wounds.
She couldn’t understand much of what they were saying. It was just a whole bunch of technical terms. The only thing she understood was broken ribs, brain damage and internal bleeding. She felt a sharp pain in her chest before darkness took over her for the second time.

She woke up six hours later in the hospital. She opened her eyes slowly. All around her were flowers, balloons and teddy bears. She saw her mom, dad and Charlie each sitting in chairs around the room. “Mom?” Maia croaked.
“Baby, you’re awake,” her mom whispered as she walked over to Maia and sat on the stool beside the bed. “How are you feeling?”
Maia took a moment to evaluate how she was actually feeling. She couldn’t move her leg and breathing still was a hard task to accomplish. She couldn’t feel her left foot at all which scared her. She had an aching headache that felt like people were drilling tiny holes into it. “Fine,” she decided. “My head really hurts.”
“The doctor said that would be the worst. Alex, go get the doctor so he can explain all of her wounds,” she suggested. She brushed a strand of Maia’s hair out of her face and smiled. Alex walked back into the room shortly with the doctor.
“Good to see that you’re awake and stable. Do you remember what happened?” the doctor asked as he sat on the end of the bed, clipboard in hand.
“Car accident…” Maia started, but didn’t finish. She didn’t want to remember.
“Yes. Anyways, you have several bodily damages as the result. First off, you have a broken leg and a fractured foot. Within the next hour we would hope to get you in surgery for that. You have three broken ribs and one of your lungs was full of fluids which we eventually drained out. You lost a severe amount of blood; however you continue to show signs of slight internal bleeding. Now, the issue we are most concerned about is your brain. You suffered severe internal bleeding to the brain and have a mild concussion. Because of these issues, you have the chance of mild to severe memory loss. If it is more on the severe side, you may have to learn how to walk all over again. Only time can tell with these things, if you heal quickly you will be less likely to have a severe result. We’re going to move you to a new floor for the foot surgery and from there we will decide what other surgeries may be necessary. Alex, Jill, we ask for you to sign these papers agreeing to surgery,” the doctor explained. He handed them a paper and a pen and they both signed it.
