When you think everything's going well, that's when you really give life a chance to hit you hard.
Jia and I seemed happier with each passing day.
Jia did her best to throw Miguel out of the picture and I blocked Jho from inserting herself in my life.
Okay na, eh. Okay na talaga. Pero hindi pa pala.
I remembered sleeping early one night on the first week of April and when I woke up in the morning, it was chaos.
I had a lot of missed calls and messages from my closest friends and my family asking me what was going on or if if everything was okay. I had no idea why they were like that until a recommended tweet notification caught my eye.
I opened it hastily with disbelief.
I almost dropped my phone.
The original tweet was of Jia helping Miguel up, who had his arm around Jia looking drunk, in the entrance of a condo building. A reply to that tweet by a different person was a photo of Jia walking out this morning, wearing the same clothes she wore.
It went around fast in the volleyball part of twitter. Everybody seemed to be assuming that Jia and Miguel were getting back together.
While looking at the photos, I couldn't breathe. My mind was unable to process anything.
Surely, Jia didn't...cheat on me.
No. Jia wouldn't.
However, the absence of a single message or missed call from Jia only added to my heartache.
I tried to call Jia but I couldn't reach her. I kept trying but I got nothing.
It was 10 minutes later when I finally got a call from Jia.
"Good morning, Hon," Jia said, her voice tired.
"Jia, where were you last night?" I asked straight to the point.
Jia paused. I wondered why she had to.
"Miguel got drunk and I was the one they called. I helped him-"
"Okay," I said, cutting off Jia, as rubbed my chest, trying to soothe the pain.
"Bei, nothing happened! I swear nothing happened-"
"Okay," I said again.
"Bea-"
"I trust you, Jia. If you say nothing happened then I believe you. Okay na 'yun."
"It's not okay!" Jia almost screamed on the other end. "You're shutting me off!"
"Jia, I just don't want to hear about it, okay?" I gritted out. "Pinaniniwalaan kita but I would rather not know anything about it anymore. Pwede ba?"
"That's not healthy and that's not how this relationship works," she hissed back.
I clenched my jaws trying to control my anger.
"Please lang, Jia. If you really want me to be alright, please let it go. Because I am."
"Bea-"
"I really don't want to hear anything about it."
Every time Jia tried, I told her the exact same thing. Until she finally sighed and gave up.
"Let's talk about this in person. I'm going there."
"No," I said firmly. "Magpahinga ka na lang muna. I'll see you tonight."
I ended the call before Jia could even say anything.
