I had walked into class, still tired from waking up early, when I saw my best friend, Kim Wooseok, waiting for me. A smile made its way on my face for the first time of the day as I headed over to my seat next to him and sat down.
Once he noticed my presence, he turned to face and proceeded to ask " how are you?" I placed my head on my arm as I let out a deep sigh. "Exams are coming up and I have been so unfocused. I'm sure I'm going to fail."
Wooseok let out a deep chuckle as I hit him on his arm, annoyed at his reaction. "Don't laugh! This is serious you idiot. My parent will kill me if I come back with a failed mark."
As I was contemplating on how I should study, or even attempt to, Wooseok cleated his voice, a sign of him wanting my attention. "If you really need help (Y/N), I can tutor you. We can study together."
My smile grew bigger as I hugged Wooseok, as my way to show gratitude. Wooseok laughed as he held me tightly to balance me so we wouldn't fall. I felt my heart beat a bit faster, just at his smallest gesture.
'You can't like him (Y/N)! You can't like him because of...'
"Somi!" I watched painfully as Wooseok immediately got up to greet his girlfriend, who also happened to be one of my friends. They both shared a small yet passionate kiss before walking back towards me, their fingers intertwined.
"Hey (Y/N). Ready for exams?" I faked my smile as best as I could, trying my best to not look at them acting so in love. Before I could reply, Wooseok cut me off. "She said she needed help studying, so I offered to tutor her. How about we all study together for the exam?"
Somi's eyes lit up at Wooseok's idea as she nodded her head vigorously. "Yes! With all of us working together, we can get through all the material in no time."
And as if it happened instantly, I was left out of the conversation again. This happened often; the two would try and bring me along but it would always end up with them lost in their own world and me being left to painfully watch.
I quickly excused myself, needing some fresh air. The first place that popped into my head was the far corner of the school's field, where a tall oak tree stood. As I was making my way there, I heard the bell ring. Not caring anymore, I ignored it's trilling and headed towards the tree.
Once I was there, I sat down at the base of the tree, I shut my eyes and began to take in a few deep breaths to calm me down. In the midst of all of that, a soft voice came out of nowhere. "Skipping class?"
My eyes shot wide open to see Han Seungwoo. He was widely known in the school for being the 'mysterious but hot' type that every girl fell for. I had never even heard his voice with all my years in high school...until now.
"Yeah.. I needed to escape a certain situation and the bell happened to ring and I just went for it. How about you?" I watched as Seungwoo took a seat next to me as he looked up at the sky. "I have a spare. I usually sleep in but on the days where I actually get up, I come here. It's very relaxing, isn't it?"
I smiled at his words as I followed his gaze up to the sky to see the white clouds. "It is. I wish I knew of this place a while ago. I really needed a place like this." Seungwoo's eyes broke away from the sky as they landed on me in curiosity. "Do you mind me asking why?"
I looked back down to meet his eyes as I shook my head. "My two closest friends are dating. I've liked one of them for a long time and he never really noticed. I'm happy for them but anytime they ever hang out with me, it feels as if I'm not there. And it hurts."
"Make you feel lonely, huh?" I nodded, bringing my legs closer to my body as I rest my chin on my knees. Seungwoo shrugged as he leaned back on the tree trunk. "I don't know. Sometimes, being lonely isn't that bad. It's kind of nice when you're invisible. You can do whatever you want."
I let out a laugh, looking at Seungwoo's confused face. "You may think you're invisible to everyone else, but you attract a lot of attention to yourself, just by being you. Do you know how many girls would kill to be close to you? That would start its own war."
Seungwoo began to laugh along with me as he playfully nudged me. "That isn't the type of attention I like. They only like me because I'm like some prize they want to win. I don't think any of them want to get to know me. Not like you."
I looked back at Seungwoo to see a bright smile on his face; The first time I had ever seen him smile. And that smile was so contagious, I couldn't help but smile back. "Well, Han Seungwoo, I would love to be your friend and get to know you better if you'd let me."
I put my hand out, signalling him to take it if he agrees. Without question, he slipped his hand into mine and shook it without hesitating. "I'd like that a lot (Y/N)." After taking a glance at his watch, he looked back at me. "Looks like your class is almost over. Want me to walk you back?"
And with no hesitation, I shook my head with a bright smile. "If it's okay with you, I'd like to get an early start on getting to know you better." We spent the entire school day telling stories and cracking jokes with one another. By the end of the day, we had only told each other so little bit we knew we had more time to tell each other more.
What I didn't know was how so much was going to change and it all started because I decided to skip a class.
