I sat in my empty classroom, listening to music as I waited for the school day to start. I worked early morning shifts as well as night shifts to be able to afford for post secondary school. Being the eldest in my family as well, majority of my time was spent either caring for my siblings, doing school work or working part time. Not much room was left for proper sleep or having friends.
I decided to take a small nap as I waited for school to start. I was soon awaken by the sound of students coming into the classroom. I lifted my head up to see my classroom being filled up slowly as the hallways were bustling with students. I took this time to get my books from my locker when I noticed something at the corner of my desk.
There was a small lunch bag with a note next to it. I opened the lunch bag out of curiosity to see it filled with snacks to eat and a packed lunch. Confused by the sudden act of kindness, I opened the note to find out more.
You should take care of yourself better. Watching you go through the day barely eating makes my heart break. I know what you go through. I admire you for that, but you never have to go through things that difficult alone. Even if you don't know who I am yet, just know that I'm always here.
I smiled at the letter, folding it properly and putting it away in my desk before opening the lunch bag once more to find something quick to eat. I looked around the classroom, trying to figure out who had sent the note, but it was useless. The note wasn't signed so it could have been anyone in the entire school. I simply let the matter be as the school bell rang and classes began.
The lunch bell finally rang and before I knew it, the students in my class exited the classroom quickly with their friends to hang out. I put away my books in my desk as I remembered the lunch bag. I grabbed it by the handle and made my way to the roof. It was the most secluded area where I could eat without worrying about anyone.
As I was walking towards the staircase, I heard someone call my name. I turned around and saw Cha Junho. He was the class president and was known in school for his good looks and high marks. I would be lying if I didn't find him unattractive. I shook those thoughts away as he started to speak. "Why are you heading upstairs? Wouldn't you want to eat with the rest of the class in the cafeteria?"
I avoided his gaze as I began to play with my fingers. "Sorry Junho, but I'm not close with any of them. I think it's best if I keep my distance." I continued to walk up the stairs towards the rooftop when Junho called out for me. "Skye! I'll be your friend! Just say the word!" I bit the inside of my mouth, frustrated at his attempts to befriend me. "I'm sorry, but it's best that you leave me alone. You won't even remember after graduation." Before he could speak again, I continued up the stairs to eat my lunch.
The end of the day rolled by quickly as I grabbed my things and headed to my part time job at a cafe near school. I was always the only one working during my shifts so it made things easier for me. Once I had arrived and entered the back room, I received a call from my manager. "Oh Skye, thank goodness I got through to you. I need to tell you that the cafe has been booked by some students' parents for a study session. It's supposed to be 11 boys. Can you handle it?"
I sighed but agreed to the task. I heard my manager's relieved voice through the line. "Thank you! I can guarantee you a bonus if you pull this off." I smiled and ended the call as I began to prepare the cafe. A few moments later, the group of boys finally entered. I came to the counter to greet them when one boy caught my eye; Junho entered the cafe and once he made eye contact with me, he smiled brightly before taking his seat.
I took a deep breath in and walked towards the group, a notepad in hand to take their orders. As I approached, I heard whispering.
"Is she the one? She's really pretty!" "Shut up Eunsang! You're going to screw things up for him!" "I think this girl is perfect for Junho.."
I heard Junho's name but decided to ignore it. I put on my biggest smile and was about to take their orders when music began to play all of a sudden. I turned around to see Junho with a bouquet in his hand.
The rest of the boys began to cheer as I stared at him, still in shock . "Cha Junho, is this some kind of joke? You have got to be kidding me? You spent all this money to rent out a cafe to prank me? Are you that shallow?"
Junho's eyes widened when he saw his plan not working. The boys looked at each other, unsure of what to do before Junho cut the music. He threw the bouquet aside and made his way towards me, angrily gesturing to his friends to leave. Once we were alone, he took a deep breath before continuing on.
"Skye, I don't know what you've heard about me, but I'm not that type of person. I am someone who genuinely cares for you and likes you. I want to be your friend and maybe something even more. I admire you for the work you do and I want to be their for you. Please let me do that."
I felt my eyes sting from the tears that ran down my face. I wiped them away furiously as I collected myself. "Why? What could you possible gain from helping me? I may work everyday like a dog, but I am definitely not a charity case. Just leave me alone, Junho. I already told you once"
As I tried to go back to the counter, I felt Junho grab my wrist to stop me. I turned around to see his eyes red, his eyes filled with anger and pain. He calmed down before continuing on. "I care because I have feelings for you. You're not a charity case Skye. You're someone special and the only person who has made me gone crazy. I wang to be with you because of who you are, not what you've done or how you look like."
Junho softly turned me around and made me face the window. He gently placed his arms around my waist and his chin on my shoulder. "I want to know what you see when you look at your reflection Skye. Please tell me.."
More tears began to run down my face as I looked at my reflection. "I see someone who hasn't achieved much. She's ugly and fat and is barely good enough to be here. I'm just there." Junho frowned upon hearing those words and turned me around so he could face me.
"Well, I see a radiant girl. She works hard for what she wants and supports herself and her family. She feels as if she doesn't deserve love but she's wrong. Because she is more than beautiful and smart to deserve anything less."
I blushed at Junho's words as I wiped away the remaining tears from my cheek. "Thank you... no one has ever said that to me before. And it made my entire week." Junho smiled and pulled me into a tight hug. "I'm honoured to be the first. And I'll say these words to you whenever you need to hear them. Because it's nothing but the truth."
