- William's POV -
I shuffle out onto the terrace where we eat breakfast. L is sitting between Mare and Cal, chatting about something in hushed tones. Caldon is far away, removed from his normal spot next to L. Why aren't they sitting together?
I catch up to Caldon, heading to his room. "Is everything okay?" I ask him and decide to go straight to the point. "You seem to be avoiding L." "I'm not avoiding her, I'm keeping her safe." He mumbles. "Keeping her safe?" "You saw what the note said! 'Thanks for the girl.' I'm endangering her." "Don't be silly. No you're not!" I say, forcing out a laugh. He obviously doesn't believe me because he shoots me a glare. "Don't lie to my face. I'm doing this for her own good."
Avria and I sit around the wooden table in her house. "So he's avoiding her?" She asks. "He said he was protecting her." "Maybe give him some time to adjust. His life has been upended and the note did suggest that it was his fault."
- Unknown POV -
The lieutenant and I peer through the window. I can see a girl and a boy sitting around a table, discussing something. "...the note did suggest that it was his fault." The girl says. "Good. He's falling for it." I tell the lieutenant, in case he hadn't heard. There is a crunched leaves to the right, and I whip around. A teenage girl leans against the wall of the house, inspecting her nails. "Hello boys." She purrs. "Raylin." I say through gritted teeth. "So we meet again." She pushes herself off the wall. "Indeed. Though it may be your last." "Is that a threat?" I say, my vigor returning. "You decide." She says, flicking her wrist at us. A boom sounds in my ears and everything goes black.
