Chapter 29

- William's POV -

Today L, Caldon, and I explore Ascendant. The city is bright and lively. On the streets, people sell wares of all different shapes, sizes and purposes. I see a jewelry seller, like one you would find in The Stilts, and someone selling weird steel bracelets I don't know the purpose of. We wander, all of us lost in our own thoughts. Until L blurts out: "Avria?" loudly. Caldon and I turn to look at her. She runs ahead, hugging a girl who looks to be my age. When L steps back, I look at her face. She is stunning. I stare and try not to drool. Now I am being cheesy.

L inroduduces the girl to us. Her name Avria. Apparently she was L's childhood friend but moved away when they were both 10. "This is where you've been all this time?" L asks the girl. "You knew I moved, just not where to." "I thought you just went to Summerton!" "No, as soon as my parents heard about this place, we came here as fast put as we could. We were tired of the Silver officers punishing us with no cause." "We came for a different reason." "And that is...?" "I'm a newblood."

- Lam's POV -

As soon as I told Avria this news, she looked curious, not surprised. "We're you expecting that?" I ask my friend. She looks frightened and opens and closes her mouth like a fish gasping for air. "Umm... well it's better to let them tell you themselves."

She leads us back to the manor, dragging us through unfamiliar corridors. "You've been here before?" William asks with a funny look on his face. Sort of like the one Caldon wears when he is with me... She brings us to a door and knocks on it. The ex-prince's face appears in the doorway, with Mare standing behind him. "Avria!" Cal exclaims warmly. "You know her?" I ask him, surprised. "Yeah." He says, realization dawning on his face. Of what, I don't know. "Avria..." He repeats, this time warningly. "She has a right to know." Avria replies. Talking back to a royal! Avria used to be so shy. "She's ready." My friend says, defiant.
