Caldon and William got along well. That night, I brought them to my house, having warned my family earlier not to tease me or them. They don't know Caldon is a Silver yet. Hopefully I can use the famous Red Mare Barrow's case to argue that not all Silvers are bad. Dinner is simple; bread and tasteless rice lay on the table. We are abnormally crowded on the small table. Seeing someone in my dad's place fills me with joy but also makes me miss him even more. He can't be replaced by all the coin in the world.
I am in a black room. My dad is in the other corner, beckoning me with outstretched arms. Just as I reach him, he becomes hazy and turns into King Maven. The King grins wickedly. I sit up in bed, sweating. Why would my dream have King Maven in it? He is dead, just like my dad.
For breakfast, I eat leftovers from dinner. My mom calls: "Please be careful, L!" I know mom. I am always careful. I have lived in The Stilts too long to forget about caution. "Okay mom." I shout back. I slam the door. That dream has me really agitated. Was King Maven there because he and my father are both dead? But my father was kind, and Maven was not. Maybe because the young King signed the peace treaty with the Lakelands just after my father died? I suddenly realize that I am by the empty arena used to display Silver strength on First Fridays. I look around, searching for Silver offices and see none. They must assume Reds would not want to go here too often, and they are right. I am curious though, and I want to see the place that looms over The Stilts empty. I slip inside. Seeing this massive structure free of any living thing is unsettling. Normally when I come here, every square inch is packed and the noise is deafening.
After a while of looking around, I see a blur in the corner of my eye. A boy a little older that me is standing in the middle of the arena, concentrating on something in his hand. I slink through the seats, hiding behind one of the seats. I can finally see his face. He is handsome, with cutting cheekbones and black messy hair, but I am not attracted to him. His hands are placed palm up in front of him. He is staring at his hands intently.
