- Lam's POV -
I have decided that I don't really want to have kids. After seeing (and hearing) my mom throw up every morning, sleep all day from exhaustion, and cry so loud she can't speak, I don't think being a mom is that great. At least that's what I thought until I saw Shade and Coriane for the first time.
"You may join your parents now." A nurse tells me. I hurriedly stand up from the uncomfortable waiting-room chair and follow the nurse through a hall of white doors. She stops in front of a plain door, exactly like all the others. As she leads me in, I hear soft cries. They're coming from my mom, who is holding two crying, squirming bundles against her chest. She looks at them so lovingly that it makes me want to cry. My dad notices me an says: "Lam! You can come closer." I ignore the use of my full name and inch towards the left side of the cot my mom is sitting on; this side is not occupied by anyone. As I near my mom, she looks up. "Do you want to hold them?" She asks me and I nod, excited but a little scared. My dad walks over, takes the bundles from my mom's arms, and places them in mine. I look down to see two pink faces screwed up in a pout. I let out a quiet exhale as my dad says: "Coriane, Shade. This is your older sister."
I try to make my red-faced siblings stop crying by talking soothingly to them and brushing their cheeks with my thumb. "Why are they still crying?" I ask my parents, worried. My mom just laughs. "You cried for nearly a day!" Although she exclaims, I can hear the strain in her voice. "They're just getting used to their surroundings." My dad explains. "One they're settled, then they will stop. Imagine..." My dad searches for an analogy. "Imagine being in a cozy, warm bath with the lights off. And suddenly, someone opens the door and all the light floods in. It's annoying, and a little bit scary." I understand their distress now, and I try to be more comforting. "Especially since you've been in that bath for as long as you remember." I add.
