Thomas dawdled backstage in a daydream. He had left something behind and needed to fetch it before the ten minutes Roman was waiting for was up. It had been a month since he had joined and the play had been announced a week ago.
It was a modernized Romeo and Juliet, with a unique flair - Romeo would be accompanied by his angel and devil who'd verbalise his thoughts. Roman had already set his heart upon the part of Romeo's' angel and seemed determined not to give up.
Thomas found what he'd been looking for, which was his history folder filled with revision notes. He was about to exit backstage instead of across the stage when he heard someone speak. Curiously, he paused to listen.
"Seriously, you think Romeo is going to climb up onto the balcony for a girl he hardly knows? Honestly, Gabrial, you're more stupid than you look and that's an achievement in itself..."
He knew instantly that it was a Lucifer, Romeo's' devil, line. Whoever was speaking was practising the part because they skipped the next few lines and came straight in with Lucifer's' next line.
"Oh no, Romeo, don't you dare start climbing that ladder! Why do you even have a ladder?!" A small pause. "Your heart is not crying out to you! That's just an idiot! Now listen to me and get out of there before she sees- oh, she's seen you..." This person was a great actor. The emotion was being projected clearly.
Thomas followed the voice to the wings of the stage. Looking out at this mystery person, he nearly choked on the air in surprise. Virgil stood there, looking at the script with a frown. "I swear I've missed a line..." The small man mumbled, running his finger along with the page as he scanned it for missed lines. "Oh, there, erm: Shut up, Gabriel, you're thicker than Romeo's' old Nokia! Now listen to me and get out of there before she sees- oh, she's seen you..."
Thomas watched Virgil perform for a bit in awe. His phone then vibrated in his pocket and he jumped. Roman had sent him a text to 'HURRYYYYYYY!!!!'. Thomas looked back at the anxious boy performing without a care in the world and bolted out of there as silently as he could.
.:*:.
"Thomas?"
"Thomas?"
"Thomas the dank engine?"
Thomas looked up. "Huh?"
"Honestly, you've been staring into space since you've gotten back! What, did you see an elephant making out with a mouse?" Roman asked him with a huff. "I've been rehearsing my lines to you and you haven't looked up!"
Thomas smiled awkwardly at Roman who scowled back, good-naturedly. "I guess I saw something surprising?"
Roman seemed to forget about his annoyance when his curiosity piqued. "Ooh, what was it?"
"Well, you know Gabrial has a devil counterpart?"
"Yes, Lucifer, the anxious, rude demon who is very mean to the very handsome Gabrial. What about him?"
"I saw someone rehearsing his lines and they were doing exceptionally well."
"They? Was it Joan?"
"What, no!" Thomas laughed. "It was Virgil!"
Roman's' jaw dropped. "The emo nightmare? You mean, JD-Lightful?"
Thomas nodded, snickering at Roman's' shocked face. "Would you have guessed that?"
"Never! I-I mean, he hates even speaking in class! Now he's practising the lines for a main part? Damn, I didn't see that coming!" Stumbled Roman, eyes still wide as he rubbed the back of his neck.
Thomas laughed at his friend's' surprise. "Hey, you can ask him about it tomorrow! Rehearse some lines with him!" He suggested.
Roman nodded slowly then blinked. They walked along slowly. "OH, MY STARS!" Roman said loudly, making Thomas jump at least a foot in the air. Roman grabbed Thomas by the shoulders and shook him slightly. "IF VIRGIL GETS THE PART OF LUCIFER I'LL HAVE TO HIT ON HIM! AND SING SONGS WITH HIM!"
"Woah, Ro, chill, he might not get the part!" Thomas tried to assure him.
"How good was he?"
Thomas hesitated.
Roman's' panicking face dropped into unamusement. "Let me guess he was good?"
"As good as you?"
"... Do you think he'll still be able to design our costumes?"
"You've accepted defeat, haven't you?"
Roman's' shoulders slumped. "Yes..."
