Dio hovered beside me as we navigate our way through the Resistance base, heavy boots hitting the floor. The early morning light made its way in through the crevasses in the walls. The droid chirped and whizzed on our way to report for patrol, I could only hope my brother had already woken up for it.
"Good morning, Odessa." Paige fell in step with me, both in orange pilot suits.
"Good morning. I'm guessing if you're awake, Cain is as well?" I smiled at her, her mouth pursed before cracking a shy smile, nodding. Before another word could be spoken, the ground shook beneath our feet. Gripping onto one another, and dust fell around us.
"Was that an earthquake?" She asked after we regained our balance. A moment's pause, and another tremor shook us. Red light flooded around us flashing.
"This is not a drill. Commence complete evacuation, all pilots report to the hanger. I repeat this is not a drill. Evacuate the base"
Our eyes met briefly before the intercom cut off, "The First Order is here."
Never have I ever seen a base in so much panic, and yet so calm at the same time. All running around so quickly, as well as taking off towards the sky in ships. The First Order had found the base of D'Qar. There was a message intercepted earlier in the control room, informing us on their plans to destroy the base in its entirety.
After Paige and I took off in different directions, I gathered what I would need. As well as the few valuables I had collected. Dio had strapped himself onto my back as I ran through the base for the hanger. Ducking beneath other ships with their pilots, reaching my x-wing as quickly as possible. Taking a brief sweep of the ships around me, I couldn't see my brother's or Poe's.
Scrambling up the ladder, Dio flew off my back setting himself into the ship. Pulling in the steps, I took one last look at the base before closing the hatch.
Starting the ship, I flipped the comm on first.
"Cain, I repeat Cain. Where's your location?" I spoke quickly as I began to take off, the radio static was loud.
"Almost to the main carrier." Relief washed over me, as I finally took off towards the sky.
"Copy that, I'm on my way up with one of the last of the evac groups." I reported, making sure to watch for any stray TIE fighters that could be lurking in the vast darkness of the system.
Upon approach to the large cruiser, I was already removing my pilots helmet before even reaching the landing zone. As the x-wing deployed its legs to take its rest, the hatch was opening. Quickly, I jumped from the cockpit. Climbing onto the wing, sliding off of it.
Dio flew close behind me as I raced through the halls to the bridge of the cruiser. Addressing my fellow Resistance members, I stood next to General Organa. My gold and white droid attached itself to my back.
"There's one last group of ships preparing to take off for our cruiser. Everyone from the base has been accounted for." a man announced, she gave a hesitant nod but she did not look up. Instead her eyes were on the monitor ahead of us. Eyebrows furrowed, my eyes followed her gaze.
That idiot! He's going to get himself killed!
I could hear the crackling of his intercom as it gently came through on our side. His voice along with the beeping.
"Happy beeps here, buddy, come on. We've pulled crazier stunts than this." Despite Poe's typical confidence, his voice betrayed him. Questioning this decision.
"Just for the record, Commander Dameron, I'm with the droid on this one." Leia spoke like a stern mother.
"I second that." adding in my own voice.
