"See?" The Doctor pointed to his monitor; Ella moved closer until she was standing right in front of him. "This planet should have billions of life signs, including the animals but there's only a handful besides the two of us."

Ella's dark eyes raced across the screen, seeing comparisons to how the planet looked at peak civilization and now. The Doctor was right, the entire planet was dead.

The two quickly found the other life signals shown on the monitor and breathed a small sigh of relief that most of them were in the same area.

The two ran to the laboratory closest to them as it was a couple miles to the east of where the Tardis was parked. Ella was quickly shot down when she asked why they couldn't take the Tardis.

The Doctor just spouted something about how they couldn't move the Tardis once they landed because of some reason that didn't make much sense to the human.

"Hoo! I gotta start working out more." Ella groaned. "I'm just realizing how much running we gotta do with this job."

"This isn't a job." The Doctor insisted as they drew closer to the laboratory, Ella could faintly see it approaching in the glowing night.

"Sure, it isn't." Ella sarcastically replied. "So, what's the plan, boss?"

"Um, I don't know. I usually make them up as I go." The Doctor smiled like he was proud of himself.

"A little improv never hurt anybody." Ella sassed then mumbled, "unless you have an entire planet's welfare on your hands."

When the travelers broke into the laboratory, they were instantly accosted by security. "I guess I should get used to having space guns pointed at me," the Doctor moved Ella behind him, and she gripped onto his jacket in response.

"Just let me do the talking, Giselle." The Doctor had dug around in his jacket pocket and pulled out a brown leather wallet and showed the security guards what was on the inside.

"They sent you from Headquarters?" The security guard, who must have been the leader among the group, looked between the two before shrugging and leading them through the laboratory.

"What was that you showed them?" Ella walked closely behind the Doctor while trailing her eyes around the lab they were in. With the inhabitants of the planet all dead the amount of security was mildly alarming.

"Psychic paper, it shows people what I want them to see." The Doctor explained as he flashed her the paper, almost too quick for her to see anything.

"Ah, so you're single?" Ella laughed at the shocked expression the Doctor shot her at her teasing.

"It does not say that," he sputtered.

"I was kidding Doc, it just said something about the University of Glasgow, I think." Ella intently studied the rooms that they passed full of machines that were completely foreign to her.
