Bones woke up slowly. His head ached. He wondered how long he had been asleep. The last thing he remembered was being sprayed with a poison.

He stretched and, blinking, saw a black haired woman in the Medbay. He squinted. It was definitely Jenny.

He settled back down and watched her through his eyelashes.

She wandered over a few minutes later. 'McCoy?'

'I'm awake.' He yawned. 'How long have I been out?'

'Nearly a whole day.' Jenny answered, rubbing her eyes tiredly. She hadn't gotten all that much sleep.

'Did you catch him?' Bones asked curiously.

Jenny thought back to her boot on Arreq's neck, as Spock clapped the space cuffs on and hauled him away. 'Yeah.'

She picked at her nail. 'I suppose I have duties to attend.'

'What is it you do exactly?' Bones asked with a twinge of tiredness tacked onto the end of his sarcastic quip.

'Save your ass apparently.' Jenny responded in kind. 'Well Dr. McCoy, I'll see you at my next check-up.' She turned to go.

'Wait!' He held a hand.

She stopped.

'I never did thank you for savin my life.' He said gruffly.

'Eh what are friends for?' She saluted with a tired grin and went out.

She hadn't told him all the details. What happened with Arreq would be just the beginning if she kept being friends with Bones or Kirk. Jenny had decided with a feeling of regret to slowly cut him off.

Starting with dinner every night.

For the next three days, she was "busy", "forgot" or got "waylaid".

Bones was confused and upset. He figured she was uncomfortable with him, after the Krishan whisky incident. I thought she said we were friends. Like sure she's damn insane, but still.

Vi watched the whole thing play out in Vulcan silence. She discussed it with Spock.

'Her response is entirely logical.' Spock defended.

'Spock, it doesn't make any sense. I saw her looking after him, and now she avoids him?' Vi pulled a face.

'Perhaps she reasons that if her friendship with Dr. McCoy became common knowledge then an incident such as this one could become exponentially more likely to occur.' Spock explained carefully.

'How has the freak attack on Bones got anything to do with their friendship?'

'Most likely because of her past. The good doctor has confided in me of her true identity.' Spock sighed.

'What past?' Vi squinted. 'I can't believe you're holding out on me!'

'I apologize for any hurt feelings I may have caused. I was asked not to share this information. Please know this does not reflect my feelings as to your personal trustworthiness.' Spock responded.

The corner of Vi's mouth twitched. She could never stay mad at him when he was upset. His chocolate brown eyes were the windows to his soul. 'I forgive you you meanie. I would have liked to know. Who is she?'

'She is that woman we were talking about some time ago, with the firearms and interesting reputation.' Spock blinked at Vi. 'She turned out to be a freelance bounty hunter.'

She gave a little gasp. "Ooh so what is she doing on the Enterprise? She's not with the Federation.'

'She was apparently hunting down the alien who attacked Doctor McCoy.'
