Sunday, the day after going shopping with Marie, you found yourself on campus. Michael's team was having a match today and since you had taken the entire weekend off, you decided to go watch.
It was also a chance to give him the Christmas gift you had gotten him.
The emptiness of the campus was almost scary and you were glad when you saw some people hanging around outside the gym when you approached it.
When you stepped inside, the players were already warming up and you saw that the stands were about halfway full. You guessed there had to be about 100 people there, way more than you had expected for a college match.
You took place near some students that were wearing your college's colors, but made sure to keep your distance a bit.
While you were watching the warm-ups, Michael spotted you and waved at you. You lifted your hand in return, a little bit embarrassed as some people were now looking at you.
Michael had told you he would still be on the bench for most of the game. He had only recently gotten his cast removed and started practice again. You watched him take place on the bench as others took place on the field.
A whistle sounded and the game was underway. Points fell faster than you could have imagined, this was much faster paced than any of the sports you had ever watched.
When the opposing team reached 22 points and Michael's team was trailing five points behind he was put on the field. Since that first time you had come to watch their training you had learned that Michael was a 'wing spiker', so you guessed a lot of pressure was now on him to score and turn the tide for his team.
He did manage to score four points, but they lost the set anyway. At the start of the next set he was back on the bench.
They won that set, and Michael was allowed to start in the third set, but only for about half of it. He did not get to play anymore after that, but they won the game nonetheless.
You waited for most of the supporters to leave before heading to the team to find Michael.
When he saw you approach he jogged to meet you. "Hey! How did you like it?"
"It was a lot of fun." You replied, thankful that he had stepped away from the rest of the team to greet you.
You hadn't really connected with anyone else on the team, to them you were most likely just a spectator.
"Do you have time to step out for a bit?" You asked him, not wanting to give him a gift in front of others.
He seemed taken aback for a moment but then quickly recovered. "Let me just go grab my coat."
He returned not much later wearing his warm winter coat. "I really can't stand the cold." He informed you.
"I'm sorry, should we stay in?" You didn't want him to feel uncomfortable because you wanted to step outside.
"Nah, it's okay. There was something I wanted to ask you anyway, away from prying ears." He told you as he held the door open for you.
You walked a bit until you found an empty bench away from the bustle near the gym.
The silence between you quickly ended when you fished the keychain, wrapped in Christmas themed paper out of your bag and gave it to him.
"What? For me?" Michael exclaimed delighted. "You shouldn't have! I've got nothing for you, I feel so bad!"
"That's okay, it's just something small anyway, don't expect too much." You didn't want him to get his hopes up for a keychain.
He unwrapped the gift and attached the keychain to his bag happily. You made a move to get up,but he stopped you.
"I'd like to ask you something, if that's okay with you."
You nodded, wondering where this was going.
"If you have time, would you like to go grab dinner one of these days? You know... Like, a date?"
It seemed surprise was clear on your face as he added : "Only if you feel up to it of course, or we could do something else."
You had to think for a little while but then, you nodded. "I'm free on Wednesday, after classes."
It was not a fair strategy, but you had used it on your former friends more than once. Tell them you do want to make plans with them, but say that you're only available on days they are not. You knew Michael had volleyball practice on Wednesdays after classes.
"Sweet, since we're having a break from practice for the holidays, that works for me." He pulled out his phone and looked at his calendar. "Shall we go immediately from here, or do you want me to pick you up at your place?"
You were lost for words for a moment before you replied. "Here is fine."
Katie called to him from afar and he grabbed his bag before getting up. "Thanks for the gift, I'll see you on Wednesday then!"
And with a skip in his step, he walked off, leaving you behind stunned.
You had a date.
You spent most of your way home getting yourself more and more worked up about what just happened. By the time you walked through your door, your worries had escalated from 'I have nothing to wear' to 'I'm going to make a fool out of myself and the whole world will hate me.'
There was only one thing left to do: call Marie.
She was elated about the news and to your surprise, she didn't mention Ushijima once. You had expected her to advocate true love and soulmates in his defense, but it seemed that the reality of this date trumped the potential drama of a long-distance relationship.
She promised to bring over some of her clothes for you, you had about the same build as her, and she gave you some tips and generally just calmed you down.
By the end of the call she had been able to convince you that there was nothing wrong with telling a guy that you were not interested in him that way. Especially when you hadn't even known him for two months. And if after the date it turned out that you were, then all the better for the both of you.
You were even more calmed down when you had a study session with Wakatoshi that evening and you were able to talk about the game after your lesson.
It had become increasingly easy to talk to him, with him improving his English and you learning about volleyball. He sometimes talked to you about his training and you talked to him about things you learned by watching Michael's team.
Now and again Oikawa walked in on your conversation to complain to him about something.
You had also seen someone in the background reading manga in the top bunk of the bed who you guessed was his roommate, Satori. But most of the times it was just you and him for the duration of the call.
Today was one of those days when Oikawa barged in, complained about something, looked at Wakatoshi's laptop and left.
Five minutes later you had a friend request. 'Hey sensei, please add me ;) Tooru.'
At this rate you would have more contacts in Japan than your own country.
You decided to wait to accept until your call with Wakatoshi had ended. Somehow you thought it would annoy him to know Oikawa was on your friendlist.
You figured that was the exact reason Oikawa had added you in the first place, to annoy Wakatoshi.

A/N :
This was another one that was difficult to end!
I've been writing a lot lately and have about four chapter's worth of draft ready for future chapters! (Spoiler: there's a lot of Ushijima in them (。•̀ᴗ-)✧)
We still have a ways to go before we get there though, so look forward to that! And as always thank you for reading! (≧∇≦)/
