HIM

CHAPTER 10

The house felt so lonely and cold. I didn't want to cry because Mum was at the hospital. The doctor who I came to find out was called Daniel, said she had to stay in for the night. The thing had been with her joints around the arm to the back, they have had an injury for some time. That didn't make any sense to me, not at all. I saw her looking all fine and she even smiled like nothing was wrong.
What else could be hidden behind that strong smile?

There was a knock at the door, I went to open it and was met by two happy faces; May and Bill. I don't remember asking Bill over, what was up?
"Hey, am I late? " May asked jokingly.
Of course not, it was only 9p.m.
"No, and is he supposed to be my surprise? " I asked pointing at Bill.
They both laughed before he stretched out his hand to greet me.
"Unfortunately it's not your birthday, he would have. Are we going to stand here all night or what? "
"Oh sorry, come on in please. And tell me why you're all dressed up for just a sleepover. " I was serious.

May loved dressing up yes, but not for a sleepover. She was this not short girl with a really good figure. Her breasts were full, her hips curved so nicely, a slim waist. She had a long face, small eyes and an aquiline nose;her brows were dark,her lips were pink. She was beautiful, there was no doubt about it.  I know someone would find it strange that I was describing her that way, but it was true.

"Well, Bill is taking me out on a date, " I saw her shy face when she said that.
"In my house!"
"Actually am taking her to Springdale Hotel," Bill replied with what I assumed was some sort of pride.
Maybe he wanted me to feel bad that I wouldn't be going anywhere.
"What happens to our sleepover then May?" I asked so sadly.
"No, it's just going to be for a short time then he'll drop me here afterwards. I won't be long, I promise. "
"You better not be, I'll kill you if you do, " I didn't mean it though.
"Fine, where is your mom anyway, it's been long. "
It felt painful when she asked it.
"She has been admitted to the hospital. "
"Wait, what's wrong with her? " May asked concernedly.
"She had this joint pain somewhere around the arm but it's not so serious. She'll be fine. "
Wow! So am stronger than I thought.
"Am sorry, so you've been here alone all evening? "
I nodded my head as a way of reply. But I didn't like what came next.
"Bill, I think we'll have to postpone the date to a later day.  I want to keep her company," May looked at Bill as she said it.
"But it won't be for long you know, just an hour and you'll have her the whole night to yourself. Right Linn? " Bill argued.
That caught me off-guard, I tried to mumble something but nothing came out.
"No Bill, she's my friend. She's been here alone and sad all evening and I barely knew. I want to stay, please,"  she pleaded.
Wow! I didn't expect this other side of May. Not that she was uncaring or insensitive, I just didn't think she'd want to cancel her date plans for me.
"Fine then babe, if that's how you want it," he said as he planted a kiss on her lips.
Wow!What a nice show!
"Linn, am really sorry about your mom. I didn't mean to be mean either,  I just... "
I didn't let him finish, "it's okay really. I understand. "
Did I even understand?

We popped corn, and selected a movie, and set ourselves to watch it. I  don't even know whether it was interesting or boring, my imagination was so far from reality.

Then there was a slight tap on my shoulders. So I had fallen asleep! Wow, what a good movie that had been!
"You girls should go to bed, you've been asleep during the entire movie," Bill told us. So it wasn't only me.  May rubbed her eyes open as she let out a yawn.
"How about you? Are you getting home now? " she asked him.
"Since you're only two helpless girls, I'll stay with you here," he replied.
It was my turn to be concerned as well, " where will you sleep? "
"The sofa will be OK with me, just get me a blanket," he said smiling.
"Follow me then, " I told him.
We were going to have my bedroom, May and I. It wasn't the first time, we've had sleepovers sporadically.

I stayed in bed without falling asleep. I didn't make any attempt at waking up May, that meant no tossing or turning. Then I had to use the bathroom. But just as I was washing my hands, I heard some movement from the sitting room. I shivered at first but then remembered Bill was around, maybe he was adjusting himself in the sofa or...

He was just right in front of the bathroom when I walked out.
"Is the sofa so uncomfortable, I can let you use my room because I really can't fall asleep," I spoke so innocently.
I mean, I wasn't so much of a hater at least.
"No thanks, I can't fall asleep either. "
"So unfortunate for us then, or maybe we should just go watch a movie till I fall asleep again but you won't have to wake me up then, " I said it as a by the way. It would sound bad if May gets to see something like that. It didn't feel right.
"I kept watching you the entire time you fell asleep. Linn, you were so adorable and you still are, " Bill proclaimed as he made as if to move closer.
"Thank you, but don't you think it's bad manners talking to me that way. You have a girlfriend, remember. Look at her, not me. "
"What if I just want to look at you the entire time? To take up your pretty face and smile, is that as bad? He answered so calmly.
What was wrong with him!
" I think I'd love May to know this, " I replied seriously this time.
"You don't want to do that, do you? "
That was a threat, wasn't it?
"Well, I think I need to go back to bed," I said in return as I turned my back to him.

Just as I got into the room, May turned. She definitely looked up upon hearing my footsteps. She felt her side empty I guess, that's why she figured out it was me and asked me why I was up so early.
"The sun doesn't look like it's coming up soon,not for another 3 hours or so, " she spoke in a scratchy voice.
"I needed to use the bathroom, that's all. "
Then just in what I suppose was the sitting room, we heard a noise like something had fallen. Without a doubt, we all presumed we knew who was responsible in case anything was broken.
I got in bed and tucked myself under the covers. I didn't have to tell her after all, did I?
