Chapter 23: Revealing secrets

Nika's POV

"Am I dreaming or was that truly a monster?" Leo asked. Our thoughts were jumbled, mostly mine because I'm feeling pain, tiredness and relief at the same time.

"That was truly a monster." I saw Jake look at me then at Chelsea. Chelsea subtly shook her head telling him something I did not know. Jake then looked at me with a sad smile.

"We saw four of those in the mall, they were chasing Nika and her friends." Audric said, sitting on the arm of the couch. Ashley sat beside me still cleaning the my wound with antiseptic.

"They have an average speed of 5 kilometers per minute! How can you outrun them?" Chelsea looked at me in disbelief, I furrowed my eyebrows as to why she knew how fast they were.

"I think they haven't ate for long, they were stuck inside the control room for God knows how long! But how do you know how fast they go?" I asked. She looked taken aback by my question, but she just shook her head.

"I've seen one chase a sports car before." Chelsea said. I can see she was lying because she didn't look at me directly, these people were hiding something that we didn't know.

"They're like, dead people who came back from the graves." Asher said. Ashley wrapped my cut with gauze and continued to treat other scratches.

"My arms are soar, those guns are heavy!" Leo said while stretching his arms while Jake looked at him with a smirk.

"Soar? Or you're just too weak to hold it?" Jake exclaimed. Leo scoffed, and another argument happened. Ashley was done treating my wounds, she held my hand and looked at me.

"It's only been a day and a lot has happened to you, you should stay here tomorrow with Leo and Jake while we raid stores." Ashley worriedly said. I shook my head and looked at her eyes.

"No, I'll go with you guys. I get bored easily." I simply said. She looked at me intently and sighed loudly.

"What if something happens again? I wouldn't forgive myself if something did." She said. I squeezed her hand and gave her a reassuring smile.

"It's okay, I'll stay safe when I'm alone, there will be five of us so we'll be able to help each other." I said. She nodded, we stayed there looking at each other's eyes for a minute or so. Her eyes were the same exact like Reagans, whenever I look into her eyes I always remember Reagan.

"We'll go and prepare dinner, maybe you could all grab a snack especially you Nika you some energy and vitamins." Chelsea said. She walked infront of me and leaned to kiss my right cheek. Ashley smacked her sister's thigh after she kissed me, Chelsea just winked at her and hopped to the kitchen with Leo.

We headed to the dining room and the boys grabbed some chips and water, Ashley grabbed some crackers and bottle water, while I grabbed two granola bars and a bottled water as well.

"Aren't you gonna help you sister cook?" I asked. She shook her head and opened her crackers.

"Nah, I'm hungry." She said as she popped a cracker in her mouth then she got up and walked to one of the table.

Ashley brought out a portable radio, and scanned through the stations until one station had caught our attention.

"All citizens, please stay indoors with your kids, pets, and family! Advisory from the government, stay away from the infected and seek evacuation centers close to your location. Avoid contact and saliva transmission from the infected, if ever bitten clean the wound ASAP and seek doctors immediately! Here are list of some safe areas and barracks:
