Chapter 28: No One Left Behind

Nika's POV

"How you feeling?" Chelsea asked in a soft voice as we walked away from the Tuary, as Allen call it.

"Relieved, anguished and upset. Those are the general ones, I don't know the other emotions I'm feeling." I respond in a whisper tone. I didn't want to talk about the funeral, I just kinda wanna keep it to myself. She cling onto my arm and leaned her head to my shoulder.

"It's okay to feel emotions you're not familiar to...but I did read somewhere on the internet that when you're experiencing unfamiliar emotions your heart tends to weaken and in order to strengthen it, is by physical contact or emotional connection with someone." She replies. Guess that explains the stinging that's happening in my heart right now.

Allen suggested that we should have this thing called 'buddy system' where we choose a partner that we would stick to wherever we go. As you can tell, Chelsea chose me. As soon as Allen finished explaining what a buddy system is Chelsea screamed my name. Literally.

The walk back to the car was peaceful as the trees were swinging back and forth because of the wind. The sun rays was peering through the branches and leaves, like the once you see in movies. We reached the car in a few minutes and we immediately hopped in, I sat at the backseat with Chelsea, Asher, Ashley. We were sitting in that order starting Chelsea who was sitting from the far left seat to me from the far right seat.

Asher was sitting beside Chelsea while Ashley was y'know...beside me. I can see tension between us was rising and it was so clear that you can probably see it by naked eye. I felt that she's trying so hard not to let any of her body touch me, probably thinking that I was gonna get uncomfy when she does, which is not true.

I looked out the window tried to pay attention to the trees and grass that we were passing by but I couldn't concentrate with Ashley's leg bouncing up and down lightly. Almost out of patience, I placed my hand on her thigh to stop her from bouncing it again. I felt her breathing intensify while looking at my hand that was on her thigh. This girl is really gay panicking right now.

"You gotta stop bouncing your leg, it's distracting me." I whispered, only loud enough for her to hear. She bit her lips and nodded.

"Sorry." She whispered back. I looked back at the trees admiring the art of nature.

"Nika...your hand." I heard her say. I didn't even notice my hand were still on her thigh, I quickly retrieved my hand and murmured a sorry.

The drive back to town was surprisingly fast, or maybe I wasn't paying any attention. I thought a lot about the funeral, I was satisfied with it. We didn't really give her a proper funeral but atleast she had a proper burial and that's enough for me. I came to a realization that I need to accept that she's gone forever, that's life. Nothing's permanent.

"We haven't looted this place before." The squeak of the handbreak pulled me out of my thoughts. I looked at it and it was a mall, I held my gun and jumped out of the car.

"Okay, listen up. I'm unfamiliar with the place so if anything goes wrong go straight to the nearest exit you can find." Allen exclaimed. We were all huddled up in front of the car while holding our guns.

"The buddy system will happen here," Allen said making Chelsea hop in excitement. "But I suggest it should be opposite genders."

"What?! Why? Two girls can protect each other!" Chelsea opposed. I looked around checking other was any zombies near.

"Yes, they can but in times like this you need someone masculine by your side. Especially when there's a creature out there that's thrice your size." Allen explains. Chelsea huffed crossed her arms, she really wanted me to be her buddy.
