Sebastian was outside the door when I left, eyes focused on me. I gave him a slight nod as the door closed behind me, it's quiet "click" seemingly emphasizing the vow I'd sworn.
"Eve," he nodded back.
"Sebastian," I replied. He held his arm out to me and I took it, letting him guide me down the hall.
"I suppose I must congratulate you," he said a moment later.
I frowned, "If I might ask... what happened in London?"
"Whatever do you mean?"
I pursed my lips, "Ciel would never open himself like that over something like a death. Not demanding loyalty in such a way, at least."
Sebastian frowned, "Let us go somewhere quieter first."
I raised an eyebrow, wondering why and he tilted his head back slightly. I used my peripheral vision and saw three heads: one burgundy, one strawberry blonde, and the other a scruffy blond, peeping out from a wall behind us.
"This may sound foolish, but how on Earth can Ciel tolerate these people?"
"They owe him their lives, and thus, great loyalty."
"Why does Ciel insist on such loyalty?"
Sebastian remained silent as we perused the hallways of the manor, descending back down to the first floor. I saw his gaze flicker around the room as we went behind a pillar and then suddenly, we were outside. Around us several hedges rose high, concealing us in their neatly trimmed branches. I closed my eyes, waiting for the dizziness to pass before turning to Sebastian.
"I've told you time and time again-" I whined.
"I apologize. I could not risk having them see our departure."
I sighed, "Fine." Sebastian led us around a corner and there was a quaint bench with a fountain view. We took the seat, staring at a tall fountain which jettisoned pure, clean water. I let the view settle for a moment before turning back to Sebastian, "So?"
The corner of Sebastian's mouth twitched, "I suppose I should now tell you, left hand of the guard dog of the Queen."
The corners of my mouth turned down in a frown, "I suppose that is a title which carries many burdens with it."
"Yes, indeed. Her majesty has many perilous adventures which she forces our young master to endure."
I nodded, "Yes, I can tell. Why would she stick a 13-year-old boy on the case of Jack the Ripper?"
Sebastian nodded, "That is how things are, and have been. The Phantomhives have always taken care of the Queen's dirty tasks."
I turned to face Sebastian, one leg crossing over the other, "What do you mean by that?"
"His great-grandfather, grandfather, and own father performed similar duties."
"I see... has perhaps Ciel taken on his father's duties out of..." I struggled to find the word.
Sebastian's face turned impassive, "He feels it's his duty. That is all."
"He doesn't hate them, does he? His parents? For leaving him alone?"
"No, I believe he does not. Although, he does tend to remove anything from his sight which reminds him of them."
"I see."
