A Letter Arrives

Days passed as normally as they could in the manor. I only witnessed a few more life-threatening instances during that first week, such as Finny trying to kill a rat with a head bust and Mey-rin running through the halls with five boxes of wine. They were truly peculiar individuals. I also discovered that the three only ever really messed up when they got excited about something. Unfortunately, for Mey-rin, that was literally all of the time. Whenever she saw Sebastian, whenever she did something Sebastian ordered, whenever she and the other two came up with some diabolical scheme to try and impress Sebastian, she messed up. But even beyond that, whenever another person talked to her and she was doing something, like dusting, she was prone to jumping around and knocking something over in the process. For Finny, who tended the garden with his unnatural strength, all it took for him to mess up was momentary lapse of attention to grab cement instead of fertilizer and he wouldn't even notice the incident until it was way too late to correct it. And Bard, well, Bard only had to cook. Most days were normal, but whenever we had a visitor to the manor or something, he'd pull out some sort of dangerous device from some random, hidden corner or some how create some sort explosive that wound up somehow destroying a part on the house. It was great. I constantly had to be on the lookout, peeping around corners and such, to avoid having my head whacked off by a broom stick or blown off by a bomb. Mostly, I just avoided the three unless I needed to directly talk to them. Or, if I was sitting and they were sitting and we were just talking, and that was all that we were doing.

Don't get me wrong, they were wonderful, just a handful to manage, so I understood exactly why Sebastian was so exasperated by them.

I strode out of the house one day, carrying an empty bird cage that I'd be told to toss out, when I saw a carriage pull up to the house. The driver quickly jumped off the top and opened the door. Out came a man dressed all in black, carrying a white letter in his hand.

Interesting.

He came up to me, stopping in front of me.

"How might I be of assistance to you, Sir?" I asked. He looked fairly wealthy, judging by the watch on his wrist.

He spoke, his voice gruff, "Are you one of the Dogs?"

I raised an eyebrow, "...Yes."

He nodded slightly and thrust the letter out to me. I blinked, hesitantly reaching my hand out to take it. He, obviously not a patient man, shoved the letter into it. With a quick nod, he turned around, striding back to his carriage.

"Thanks for visiting?" I asked.

He stopped and turned his head, nodding slightly before boarding the carriage.

I watched them, slightly dumbfounded, as they pulled away. The carriage quickly disappeared. I then looked down at the letter, turning it over to see the seal on the back. The royal arms.

Sebastian was instantly by my side, snatching the letter from my hand.

"Uh-uhm..." I stuttered out.

"Come with me," he said promptly, reaching down to take my hand. I was dragged along behind him as we entered the house, tracking up to Ciel's study.

"My Lord," Sebastian said as he knocked gently on the door.

"Enter," Ciel said.

Sebastian reached down and opened the door and we filed in together.

"A letter has arrived from Her, my Lord."
