The cyber army was back, there was no doubt about it. Not to mention that they were stronger than ever. The doctor felt her hearts drop upon seeing the future she had created by giving the lone cyberman what it wanted, having to hold her breath and block out the images of Gallifrey that resembled new earth all too well.
She felt someone slip their hand into hers, and glanced down to see. She looked up at Yaz's face, which was soft with companion and reassurance as she squeezed her hand more. The doctor could swear her cheeks were redder than usual, but told herself she was seeing things. As much as she wanted to hold Yaz's hand back, to hug her, to place a kiss on her lips and tell her everything was going to be okay, she couldn't.
She couldn't lie to her anymore.
Reluctantly, the blonde pulled her hand away from Yaz's, stepping out of the Tardis and leading the way through the baron landscape. Yaz stood at the door for a moment longer than she should have, fighting through the deep pain her heart was burning with before Graham and Ryan forced her out too. She bit her lip and focused on the mission at hand- they hand lives to save for Christ's sake, she could deal with this later.
They all lugged their bits of equipment towards the open plain, Graham Ryan and Yaz all staring with secret terror at the world around them. It was dry, and dead, concrete floors and gravely paths all being taken over by shredded grass and dirt. It looked bombed, some patches even covered in ash and occasional flames. There were buildings, but they were crumbling under their own structures, holes in the brick and vines climbing to the fallen ceilings.
It was a state none of them had ever hoped to see their home planet in, a scary one at that, but they couldn't let that get to them. The doctor shuddered, sensing her friends discomfort from behind her. She knew what they were feeling, she too had opened the Tardis door to her home destroyed and burning. The only thing caving her sympathy was that they could fix this- whereas Gallifrey was long gone.
Well, she hoped they could.
Yaz clenched her fists, digging her fingernails into her palms nervously as the reality of the situation came crashing down on her. This was earth, and if they weren't careful, this could be what she had to go home to. Ryan took her hand and rubbed it soothingly, earning a shy smile from her. The doctor peered over her shoulder and sighed in disappointment at the sight- not that she knew why, she understood that her and Yaz could never make it work.
"Alright guys, you remember what I told you." The doctor stopped and turned to her friends, gesturing to the mechanical equipment each of them were carrying. They all shared a nod, flashing weak smiles that the blonde felt guilty for causing. She nodded unsurely and led the way towards a particularly bashed house, pausing in shock as the sounds of ships in the distance sent her adrenaline pumping. "They're here, they're coming- quickly you lot!" She yelled to the fam as she started sprinting to the open fields.
She spotted a huddle of people outside, others running to cover and others already taking shelter. She could hear their panicked voices as the cyber army drew closer to what civilisation they had left, but all she could focus on was Yaz's encouraging voice from behind her, panting to keep up. She couldn't comprehend the guilt she felt for pushing her away for reasons she didn't understand, and ruining their relationship before it'd even begun. She loved Yaz, but she couldn't risk her feelings again.
"Need a hand?" The doctor said enthusiastically as they reached the crowd of people, who all turned to look at the fam with a mix of worried and confused faces. "Who're you lot?" A woman asked, stress lacing her tone. The doctor softened her expression and looked to her friends. "It's okay, we're here to help, Promise. I'm the doctor, this is Ryan, Graham and Yaz." She pointed forward each of them, and then gestured to the equipment they were carrying.
